Job Description
Technical Writer I Position Summary The Technical Writer is responsible for preparing, managing, and maintaining high‑quality technical documentation that communicates complex information clearly and consistently. This role performs mechanical and substantive editing while ensuring compliance with documentation standards, templates, and regulatory requirements. The position supports documentation lifecycle management, process standardization, and collaboration with Engineering. Key Objectives Prepare, manage, and maintain documentation and document status to effectively communicate technical information Ensure documentation quality, consistency, efficiency, and compliance with established standards and templates Support continuous improvement of documentation processes and tools Primary Responsibilities Technical Documentation Management & Editing Standardize and enforce formatting, style, and structural standards using the Technical Documentation Handbook and approved templates Prepare, populate, edit, peer review and update technical documents upon request Perform Technical editing to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, and compliance Maintain metrics for document turnaround times and submissions Provide interface with Document Control and Publishing personnel Document Lifecycle & Systems Ensure documents remain current, accurate, and accessible Collaboration & Review Work closely with Engineering to clarify scope, content, and documentation requirements Actively participate in documentation-related meetings, process improvement initiatives, and project management activities Provide technical writing support with population of Statement of Work (SOW) Templates, Training & Standardization Maintain documentation templates and implement improvements as needed Train and retrain Engineering on proper use of OMI templates, including updates and expectations Train, retrain, and track new hires-particularly recent college graduates-on document navigation and compliance practices Work Management Work independently, prioritize competing tasks, and meet deadlines Provide daily or periodic status reports to management as requested Additional Duties Assist with departmental projects and responsibilities as assigned Qualifications Required Skills & Knowledge Strong mechanical editing skills Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint Familiarity with government contracts Understanding of quality systems and internal/external audits Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Minimum Requirements Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field, and 4+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience Excellent written communication skills Advanced proficiency with word-processing and integrated software applications Ability to work in a detail‑oriented, deadline‑driven environment Ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance, if required Work Environment, Physical & Mental Demands Typical office environment with no unusual hazards Occasional lifting to 20 pounds Prolonged periods of sitting and computer usage Continuous visual focus when reviewing documentation Continuous verbal and auditory communication Sustained mental alertness, analytical thinking, and attention to detail Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work under deadlines Ongoing learning of alternative methods and tools (e.g., extracting tables from complex PDF drawings) to deliver quality documentation Located on sight at Kenedy Space Center (KSC) Other Responsibilities Safety Support and promote a safety‑first culture Maintain personal accountability for a safe and compliant work environment Quality Uphold quality as the foundation of business operations Ensure services and documentation consistently meet customer and regulatory expectations Procedure Compliance Read, understand, and comply with all applicable operational, safety, quality, and environmental policies, procedures, and plans relevant to the role We are an Equal Employment Opportunity employer as defined by the EEOC Technical Writer
