Technical Writer Job Description This role focuses on creating clear, accurate, and user-friendly service manuals, repair kits, and maintenance manuals for complex machinery developed by the engineering team. The Technical Writer collaborates closely with engineers and vendors to transform technical information into structured documentation that supports troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance activities. This position involves working with both 2D and 3D content, including photographs, drawings, and diagrams, to produce comprehensive manuals that meet high quality and accuracy standards. Responsibilities Write detailed service manuals, repair kit documentation, and maintenance manuals for machines under development by the engineering team. Organize manuals into logical chapters and sections based on machine functions to ensure clarity and ease of use. Develop clear, step-by-step instructions for operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair after meeting with engineering teams to gather technical information. Review and interpret vendor documentation to extract specifications, troubleshooting procedures, and repair information for machine components such as engines, hydraulic systems, clutches, and other mechanical or electrical parts. Create and maintain all addendums and updates for each manual to ensure documentation remains current and accurate. Capture photographs as needed to support written instructions and collaborate on the creation or integration of 2D and 3D visual content, including drawings and diagrams. Incorporate feedback from a four-step review process and revise content after each review cycle to improve clarity, accuracy, and completeness. Collaborate closely with engineering teams and other stakeholders to verify technical details and resolve any discrepancies in documentation. Ensure all documentation adheres to established style guidelines, formatting standards, and quality expectations. Manage multiple projects and manuals concurrently while meeting deadlines for a team that is working under tight schedules. Essential Skills At least 6 months of experience in technical writing, which may include experience gained through academic projects or internships. Strong writing skills with the ability to explain complex mechanical and technical concepts in clear, concise, and user-friendly language. Experience in English, Journalism, or a similar field, supported by a relevant degree or equivalent education. Proficiency in technical writing practices, including structuring content, creating step-by-step instructions, and organizing manuals by function. Ability to work with technical content related to engines, machines, hydraulics, and other mechanical or electrical systems. Familiarity with tools such as Photoshop or similar software to support image preparation and integration into manuals. Strong attention to detail and accuracy when working with specifications, troubleshooting procedures, and repair information. Effective communication skills to collaborate with engineering teams and interpret vendor documentation. Ability to incorporate feedback from a structured multi-step review process and make revisions efficiently. Additional Skills & Qualifications Degree in English, Journalism, or a closely related field is highly valued and provides an opportunity to apply academic training in a practical setting. Mechanical aptitude or experience with engines, machines, hydraulics, or similar systems is a plus but not required. Experience working with 2D and 3D content, including diagrams and technical illustrations, is beneficial. Familiarity with technical documentation standards and best practices. Interest in ongoing professional development, including advanced training in engineering-related practices and participation in mentorship programs. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment where the team is working to catch up on documentation schedules. Work Environment The role is based in Pella, IA, in a cubicle-style office environment within a documentation team of approximately 25 people distributed across multiple plants along a large industrial campus. The Technical Writer collaborates frequently with engineering groups and other technical stakeholders. Training is 100% on-site, and after the first month, the schedule transitions to a hybrid arrangement with on-site work one day every other week. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, typically between 6:00-7:00 a.m. start time and a 4:00 p.m. finish. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $27.50/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
