Seeking a creative, fast-moving Second Unit DP / Camera Operator for a one-day scripted vertical micro-series shoot in Los Angeles.
IMPORTANT
This is an iPhone-only camera position. This unit will shoot entirely on iPhone rather than a traditional cinema camera package. Please apply only if you are genuinely comfortable using an iPhone as your primary production camera and understand the advantages of a fast, lightweight mobile workflow. This is not simply a B-camera position. The Second Unit DP will operate a separate content unit alongside our primary narrative unit and will be trusted to independently shoot material while the director and primary DP are working elsewhere. The second unit will primarily create short-form hooks, character-driven social content, TikTok/Reels-style pieces, alternate openings and other vertical content featuring members of the cast. As the schedule permits, the unit may also be assigned complete scripted micro-episodes or short narrative scenes that can be produced independently from the primary unit. Actors will move back and forth between the primary narrative unit and second unit throughout the day. The AD team will coordinate talent availability. When an actor becomes available, the Second Unit DP should be able to work quickly, understand the assigned concept or script, determine an efficient approach and capture the material without requiring the primary unit to stop. This position requires more than simply operating a camera. We want someone with a strong instinct for vertical storytelling and social content who understands how to grab attention quickly, find interesting framing, work with performers, recognize a strong hook and make creative decisions on the fly. The visual approach is intentionally fast, immediate and native to vertical/mobile viewing. We are not trying to disguise the iPhone as a large cinema-camera production or unnecessarily build out a traditional camera package. Good composition, exposure, movement, stabilization when appropriate, clean execution and speed are more important than creating an elaborate cinematic setup. You should be comfortable receiving an assignment such as a short script, character concept or hook idea and being able to take the available actor(s), find an appropriate area of the location and execute it independently. Some material will be planned in advance, while other content may be developed or adjusted during the shooting day based on cast availability, location opportunities and ideas that emerge on set. Adaptability is extremely important. This production may not operate like other traditional or vertical productions you've worked on previously. We are deliberately using a small, flexible crew and an unconventional workflow designed around speed, vertical content and the ability to capture a large amount of material in one day. We are looking for someone who is collaborative, creative, energetic, resourceful and comfortable thinking on the fly rather than someone who needs a conventional camera-department structure to work effectively. Professional iPhone/mobile shooting experience is strongly preferred. Vertical narrative, social-media, TikTok/Reels, creator content or other short-form experience is also highly relevant. Please include links to examples of vertical, iPhone/mobile, social or narrative work you personally shot. Clearly identify any examples where you were the primary camera operator.
