Job Description
About Us Lawton Academy provides performing-arts and filmmaking education for children and teenagers. Our filmmaking program gives students the opportunity to develop the creative and technical skills to make their own original short films. Position Summary We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic Filmmaking Instructor to lead our semester-long Movie Making Workshop program. They will guide students through all three phases of production: pre-production, production, and post-production. Students will develop, shoot, and edit their own short film, generally five to seven minutes in length. The ideal candidate is an excellent teacher and mentor who combines a genuine love of film with the ability to make the filmmaking process accessible, exciting, and achievable for young people. Responsibilities Teach filmmaking classes for children 9-16 years old Guide students through story development, screenwriting, planning, casting, and pre-production. Teach students how to operate the Academy's professional film cameras and related equipment safely and effectively. Instruct students in basic cinematography, composition, lighting, and location sound. Help students understand storytelling, script structure, character development, and visual storytelling. Guide students through filming, directing, and collaborating on their short-film productions. Teach Final Cut Pro editing software, including editing, sound, titles, and exporting finished films. Support students as they complete polished short films of approximately five to seven minutes. Maintain a positive, organized, creative, SAFE, and inclusive classroom environment. Requirements Experience teaching or mentoring children and teenagers. A strong passion for film, filmmaking, and film history. Demonstrated experience guiding projects through pre-production, production, and post-production. Proficiency operating professional film cameras. Strong knowledge of lighting and audio techniques for film production. Strong understanding of storytelling, screenwriting, and script structure. Proficiency with Final Cut Pro and the ability to teach it clearly to beginning and intermediate students. Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills. A patient, encouraging approach and a genuine commitment to helping young people develop confidence and creative voice.
