Job Title:
Product Designer (Contract)Job Description This contract Product Designer role focuses on designing and modifying mechanical parts and assemblies for new and existing products using SOLIDWORKS and related tools. You will maintain and process CAD and engineering documentation, support design and print reviews, and collaborate closely with engineering, procurement, quality teams, customers, and suppliers. The initial contract is for a minimum of three months, with strong potential for extension based on workload and performance. Responsibilities Design and modify mechanical parts and assemblies using
SOLIDWORKS 3D
tools to meet customer requirements. Prepare detailed design documentation, including tolerance stack-ups, design calculations, detail sheets, modified prints, and engineering standards in response to engineering requests. Support and actively participate in print and design reviews to ensure accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with standards. Use Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word, to support design activities and engineering print creation. Provide design-related training and consultation to engineering, procurement, and quality teams as needed. Communicate effectively in both oral and written form to manage multiple design projects simultaneously. Maintain, coordinate, and process routine engineering change documentation, ensuring timely and accurate updates to CAD and engineering records. Collaborate with engineers to clarify requirements, resolve design issues, and implement improvements on existing products. Read and interpret engineering drawings and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure precise and robust designs. Perform other related design and documentation duties as required to support overall engineering objectives. Essential Skills Associate degree in design, CAD, or a related field, or a relevant design/CAD certificate. Proficiency in
SOLIDWORKS
for 3D modeling and drafting of parts and assemblies. Mechanical design experience, including work with parts, assemblies, and engineering documentation. Ability to read and interpret engineering prints and apply GD&T principles. Strong skills in preparing tolerance stack-ups, design calculations, and detailed drawings. Competence with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word, to support design and documentation tasks. Effective oral and written communication skills to manage multiple projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams. Ability to maintain and process engineering change documentation accurately and efficiently. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis), CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), and simulation tools to support design validation. Familiarity with Co-create, IDEAS, and/or AutoCAD for additional CAD and design work. Experience supporting design reviews and working closely with engineering, procurement, quality teams, customers, and suppliers. Demonstrated ability to provide training or guidance on design standards, prints, and CAD practices. Work Environment This is a minimum three-month contract role with the potential to extend based on workload; similar roles have previously extended significantly beyond the initial term. You will work closely with the engineering team, receiving direction from engineers and collaborating frequently with engineering, procurement, and quality personnel. The environment is engineering-focused and project-driven, with multiple design initiatives running in parallel and a strong emphasis on accurate CAD models, detailed drawings, and controlled engineering change documentation. You will primarily use SOLIDWORKS and Microsoft Office, with opportunities to leverage tools such as FEA, CFD, and other CAD platforms like Co-create, IDEAS, or AutoCAD when applicable. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Benton Harbor, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00
