Permanent Employment Help for . Position Summary As a Diesel Mechanic, youll play a key role in keeping our locomotives running safely and efficiently. In this hands-on position, youll inspect, service, and maintain diesel engines, trucks, and equipment while following important safety and company guidelines. Youll work with tools and instruments to diagnose mechanical issues and make repairs. Over time, you may qualify to operate specialized equipment including locomotives in a shop setting, following federal standards. This physically active role offers on-the-job training and real opportunities for growth. Reports to the Superintendent of Mechanical and Superintendent of Railway Operations. Reporting Locations:

Requires commitment to irregular work hours in support of the success of a 24/7 operation. Occasionally works extended hours and shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Physical o Able to frequently climb ladders, get on and off equipment, work at various heights including doing repairs on top of heavy equipment and locomotives, and work on uneven surfaces o Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds o Able to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, squat, crawl, and sit for extended periods of time o Able to use hands to hold, grasp, turn or pull o Able to reach over shoulder level o Able to work in tight space on locomotives and equipment o Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain EMD locomotives mechanical and electrical systems o Able to work with loud noises, chemicals, fumes, dirt, and dust o Assemble, repair, disassemble, install, or replace locomotive diesel engine components o Test and repair fuel systems, radiators, safety valves, air compressors, draft systems, couplers, brake systems, safety appliances, and lube oil pump filter systems o Repair wheels, springs, hangers, running gears, and brake rigging traction motors o Perform scheduled and preventative maintenance on locomotives, tools, and equipment, including timely 92-day inspections o Perform minor electrical repairs on locomotives o Maintain documentation on all repairs and inspections o Obtain quotes for all repairs that need to be outsourced o Maintain the assigned company vehicle, all tools required for mechanical job and grounds around work areas o Properly dispose of used materials such as oil, filters, and other waste products. o Return cores timely o Able to operate tools and equipment safely and efficiently Visual o Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, and yellow o Must have good night vision o Able to see, interpret, and relay signals o Able to judge distance and speed o Ability to plan and arrange spatially o Able to analyze reports and data o Inspect locomotive components, diagnose problems in diesel engines, trucks, and equipment Working Conditions Able to work on and around heavy equipment Outdoors in all weather conditions (could be extreme heat, cold, or wet), on uneven surfaces, in locomotive barns, or on various heights of equipment. Noise level can be high.
