Non-Exempt Position Summary The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides essential support to individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to promote independence, inclusion, and personal growth. DSPs assist with daily living activities, encourage skill development, and foster community engagement in both home and community-based settings. Through compassionate care and individualized support, DSPs help each person live a fulfilling, self-directed life with dignity and respect. Key Responsibilities 1. Daily Living and Personal Care Assist individuals with personal hygiene , including bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting while ensuring privacy and dignity. Support meal preparation, feeding , and nutritional needs as outlined in the care plan. Remind or assist with medication administration according to established procedures. Help maintain cleanliness and organization in the living environment. 2. Promoting Independence and Skill Development Encourage and guide individuals in developing life skills such as budgeting, shopping, cooking, and home management. Support independence in daily activities through patient, step-by-step instruction. Facilitate the growth of social, communication, and problem-solving skills. Promote participation in recreational, educational, and employment opportunities. 3. Behavioral and Emotional Support Implement behavior support plans to manage challenging behaviors and reinforce positive outcomes. Provide emotional support and teach coping strategies for anxiety, frustration, or stress. Model calm, respectful, and supportive interactions in all situations. 4. Health and Safety Monitoring Observe and promptly report changes in health, mood, or behavior to the Program Specialist . Assist with mobility and transfers for individuals who require physical support. Maintain a safe, clean, and structured living environment, minimizing risks and promoting well-being. Respond appropriately to medical or behavioral emergencies following established protocols. 5. Documentation and Reporting Maintain accurate daily service notes , documenting care activities, progress, and incidents using approved systems. Submit daily notes with required GPS verification for each shift. Communicate clearly with supervisors, family members, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure consistent, quality care. 6. Community Engagement and Social Integration Support individuals in participating in community activities , employment, and volunteer opportunities. Encourage the development of friendships and social relationships. Foster social inclusion by helping individuals navigate public and group environments confidently. 7. Team Collaboration and Communication Collaborate with nurses, behavioral specialists, and program staff to coordinate holistic, person-centered care. Attend staff meetings, trainings, and case discussions to enhance service quality and professional growth. Share insights on individual progress and advocate for necessary program adjustments.
Qualifications Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent (Required)
Experience:
Previous experience working with individuals with IDD or in a caregiving role (Preferred)
Licenses and Clearances:
Criminal Background Check (Required) Motor Vehicle Record Check (Required) Child Abuse Clearance (Required) Authorization to work in the United States (Required) Core Competencies Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with individuals with limited verbal abilities. Empathy, patience, and flexibility in responding to behavioral or medical needs. Active listening and sensitivity to both verbal and non-verbal communication. Strong ethical standards and respect for individual rights, autonomy, and confidentiality. Problem-solving and teamwork skills within a multidisciplinary care environment. Physical Requirements Ability to lift, transfer, and assist individuals with mobility challenges. Ability to perform moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, and household tasks. Work Environment Work occurs in home settings, community programs, and recreational centers. Flexible scheduling, including evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts , may be required. Direct interaction with individuals requiring varying levels of physical and emotional support.
