Full Job Description Position Summary :
The Nursing Director of the Child Birth Center is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the Labor & Delivery, OR/PACU, Postpartum, and Well-Baby Nursery units. The Nursing Director provides compassionate, hands-on leadership ensuring exceptional, person-centered care for mothers, newborns, and families. Guided by Planetree principles, this role fosters a healing environment that prioritizes dignity, respect, family involvement, and holistic care. The Director works in close partnership with the Chief of Obstetrics to support a collaborative, high-functioning care team and to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, patient-centered care for mothers, newborns, and families while maintaining regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and staff engagement.
Department Overview:
5-bed Labor, Delivery, and Recovery (LDR) unit 2 Labor & Delivery Operating Rooms with PACU capabilities 13-bed Postpartum /
Well-Baby Nursery Key Responsibilities:
Provide visible, supportive leadership with a strong presence in the department Ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, person-centered maternity and newborn care aligned with Planetree principles Collaborate closely with the Chief of Obstetrics to align clinical standards, protocols, and patient care goals Promote a culture of respect, shared decision-making, and family involvement in the birthing experience Oversee daily operations, staffing, and patient flow across LDR, OR/PACU, postpartum, and nursery Recruit, develop, and retain nursing and support staff; oversee performance management and professional development Ensure staff competency in obstetric, neonatal, and surgical care, including emergency response (e.g., C-sections, neonatal resuscitation) Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements Lead quality and safety initiatives focused on maternal and neonatal outcomes Engage patients and families in care design, feedback, and continuous improvement efforts Manage departmental budget, including labor, supplies, and capital planning Partner with interdisciplinary teams, including nursing, providers, anesthesia, pediatrics, and support services to ensure coordinated care
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's degree (MSN, MHA, or related field) preferred Current RN license in good standing Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in Labor & Delivery, Women's Health, or Maternal-Child Nursing, preferably in a community hospital setting Demonstrated ability to lead with empathy, collaboration, and accountability Strong understanding of person-centered care models and patient experience principles Certifications (preferred/required): BLS, ACLS, and NRP required RNC-OB or related certification preferred
