General Summary:
In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, the Director of Surgical Services is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care throughout the continuum of the perioperative time period: Preoperative, Intraoperative and Postoperative phases, directs functions of the Sterile Processing Department and effectively manages department operations through appropriate resource utilization. Oversees services of the Specialty Clinic. Leads and evaluates Perioperative and Specialty Clinic personnel in the performance of essential job functions; administrates department meetings and quality improvement activities. Exhibits professional, interpersonal and strong communication skills.Essential Functions:
Attention to Detail Ensures compliance with patient safety standards in perioperative services, sterile processing and specialty clinic in accordance with regulation entities and professional organizations including, but not limited to: CMS, DHHS, CDC, AORN, IAHCSMM, AAMI, and SGNA Ensures appropriate staffing levels, equipment, and supplies are available for perioperative and specialty clinic services. Ensures departmental compliance with organizational policies and procedures and regulatory and accreditation standards. Ensures the nursing process is the foundation of providing an individualized plan of care for patients undergoing operative or other invasive procedures Integrity Serves as a role model in professional behavior, leadership skills, problem-solving ability, coaching guidance, and interpersonal skills. Provides guidance, support, and constructive feedback to perioperative and specialty clinic team members as appropriate. Cooperation Facilitates or serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning perioperative and specialty clinic patient care. Assesses and responds appropriately to organizational culture. Establishes and maintains effective communication and collaboration with hospital departments and medical staff to resolve problems, establish and implement policies, and coordinate activities within assigned department. Concern for Others Verifies that educational resources are available for perioperative and specialty clinic personnel and holds accountable for compliance with established standards. Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information. Evokes in staff a sense of ownership of and responsibility for, their work, fellow coworkers, and continuous improvement of personnel performance.Dependability Knowledge of:
AORN, ASPAN, SGNA, IAHCSMM, AAMI
standards, CMS regulations, Nurse Practice Act, Patient's Rights, States Consent Law; medical staff by-laws; patient acuity system, hospital fire and safety plan; peri-operative care of surgical patient; specialized equipment; anesthesia agents and their usage and effect on post-operative patients. Pursues professional growth and participates in a professional organization. Seeks additional knowledge and skills appropriate to perioperative and specialty clinic services. by developing and/or participating in educational programs and activities, conferences, workshops, interdisciplinary professional meetings, and self-directed learning. Promotes the mission, vision and values of the organization. Manages operational flow of clinical services, materials management through LEAN principles and sterile processing activities. Evaluates practices and creates strategies for further improvement. Coordinates, facilitates, and manages change within perioperative and specialty clinic services and the health care organization. Collects and analyzes data related to quality or performance improvement projects that apply to perioperative and specialty clinic services. Creates a working environment that promotes positive employee attitudes, effective communications, collaboration, creativity, optimal productivity, continuous learning, and satisfaction through application of motivation, recognition and accountability principles. Oversees all planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; approving/denying time off; counseling, coaching, commendation, disciplinary actions, and terminations; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Participates in the hospital's Quality Improvement plan by gathering, and analyzing data associated with continuous improvement of care and services, and monitoring quality control programs. Monitors quality of care and any problems/concerns that would impede quality care by interacting with patients/families and monitoring care provider's competency on an ongoing basis. Compliance Promotes and adheres to the provisions of the compliance program. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility. Complies with all organizational polices regarding ethical business practices. Promotes and adheres to the TVHS core values and Standards of Behavior.Education and Experience:
Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Nebraska required Baccalaureate degree in the Science of Nursing (BSN), or, Master's degree in Nursing preferred. If no BSN, then must achieve within three years of hire. Certification in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR) preferred. If no CNOR, then pursues certification based on verified clinical experience in the operating room Four years clinical experience, preferably in operating room nursing Two years management experience preferredRegulatory Requirements:
