Coon Rapids-Bayard School Nurse Job Description Position:
School Nurse Reports to:
Building Principal Summary:
A school nurse provides healthcare for school-aged students within an educational system. Assessing the status of a student's immunization documentation and creating health plans for individuals with specific health needs and providing healthcare initiatives within the school.
Essential Job Functions:
Assessment Obtain student health and developmental histories Assume responsibility for initiation and maintenance of the pupil health records Screen and evaluate findings of deficits in vision, hearing, growth, etc. Observe the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis Planning Develop and implement a health plan for students as needed Interpret the health status of students to parents and school personnel Initiate referrals to parents, school personnel, and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow-through Recommend and help implement modification of school programs to meet students' health needs Serve as the chair of the school Wellness Committee. Conduct annual meetings encouraging staff, parent and student participation. Coordinate Backpack Program through the Iowa Food Bank and local food pantry. Student Health Services Participate as the health team specialist on the child education evaluation team to develop the Individual Education Plan (IEP). Participate as an active member of the school safety committee. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases. Dispense medications and keep accurate log of medication administration. Health Education Acquire knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty practice of school nursing on a regular and ongoing basis Participate in continuing education programs to increase knowledge, update skills, and maintain certification Act as a resource person in promoting health careers Provide formal health instruction within the classroom based on sound learning theory, as appropriate to student developmental levels Participate in the design and development of health curricula Further the application of health promotion principles within all areas of school life e.g., food service, custodial etc. Staff Services Provide health counseling for staff Provide leadership and/or support for staff wellness programs Act as a resource person to staff regarding health education and health education materials Provide training for associates and other school personnel as appropriate to the school setting Assume responsibility for in-service programs for school personnel regarding health-related issues Train appropriate personnel who assist with medication Train appropriate personnel who assist with student health needs Become a certified collector for Iowa Drug and Alcohol Testing Program (IDATP). Oversee the program and conduct all urine and saliva collections for school bus drivers; including: pre-employment, random selections and reasonable suspicion testings. Teach Blood-borne Pathogens and assure proper supplies are available to staff for blood clean up Program Management Manage school health services as appropriate to the nurse's education, position, and practice environment Demonstrate knowledge of existing school health programs and current health trends that may impact client care Adopt and utilize available technology, as appropriate to the work setting Develop and implement health policies and procedures in collaboration with school administration, board of health, and the board of education Initiate and participate in a written evaluation process for the school health program Continuously strive to improve the quality and effectiveness of school health services Ethics Is guided by the Code for Nurses (ANA) and Code of Ethics with Interpretative Statement for School Nurses (NASN), and appropriate state nurse practice acts Maintain client confidentiality within legal, regulatory, and ethical parameters of health and education Deliver care in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to student diversity in the school community Deliver care in a manner that promotes and preserves student and family autonomy, dignity, and rights Acts as a client advocate General Excellent verbal and written communication skills Able to explain complicated financial concepts Demonstrates strong organizational skills Maintain a positive rapport with students, staff, parents and the community Cooperate with and work in a courteous manner with co-workers and other personnel Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students and job and communicate the same to the community Accept constructive criticism and suggestions and seek to improve each performance responsibility Maintain confidentiality in the school operation Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules Perform such other duties as are assigned by authorized representatives of the
School Board Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
RN degree CPR certification
