An Adult Basic Education or Literacy Instructor works with adults, including young adults who are out of school, to improve literacy and strengthen basic skills in reading, writing and math. Helps students to learn English or gain a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Assesses students' educational levels, skills and goals, and differentiates instruction as needed for adults at different levels in one class. May focus on basic skills as needed for a particular occupation, or assist students with developing study skills or job search skills, or help students connect with social services.

Job Description

This is a posting for our Allegany County Jail adult education program. The Adult Educator (AE) is responsible for the adult basic education, GED and/or English as a Second Language program planning, curriculum development and student-centered planning and delivery within the jail. The AE will develop, coordinate, and ensure quality implementation of all grant program short and long term goals and objectives. The successful candidate will be a proven leader who understands the importance of analyzing data to inform thought and decision-making. (S)he will be a dedicated professional that constantly seeks improved ways of approaching the work so that Literacy West NY can better serve our community members and partners. The AE reports to the designated program manager. A commitment to the mission and programs of Literacy West NY Strong classroom management skills desired. Ability to successfully pass all background check requirements. Experience within the educational field, social work, a strong desire to work in and with the youth a must; Ability to think through problems outside of conventional structures and find ways to continuously improve results; Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues prevalent in underserved communities and students; Superior interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite(Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Outlook. A valid, clean Driver's License with reliable transportation are desirable.
