Long Island University is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Part-Time Archivist to contribute to the implementation of grants funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). The Archivist will play a key role in the digitization, cataloging, and transcription of U.S. presidential artifacts. This role addresses a critical need to preserve historical materials related to U.S. presidents prior to Herbert Hoover, whose archives are not part of the Presidential Library System. This position provides an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies, preserve critical historical records, and contribute to innovative projects that integrate archival science with artificial intelligence and interactive virtual platforms. This part-time position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation of early American presidential history, especially for archives and materials not covered by the modern Presidential Library System. You will be part of a team working to digitize and preserve historical materials, ensuring they remain accessible for future research and public engagement.Key Responsibilities:
Archival Management:
Assist in the inventory, organization, and arrangement of physical and digital collections. Apply archival best practices to ensure proper handling, preservation, and storage of sensitive materials.Digitization & Metadata Creation:
Scan historical documents and artifacts using high-quality digitization equipment. Develop detailed metadata records for digitized materials in compliance with federal standards.Transcription:
Assist with the transcription of oral histories and historical documents. Ensureaccuracy and adherence to style and format guidelines for public accessibility.Database and Repository Maintenance:
Work with the Preservice digital repository to upload, organize, and maintain digital assets. Collaborate with the project team to troubleshoot and improve system functionality.Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with the Project Director, NHPRC Presidential Fellows, and consultants. Provide input on archival processes to improve efficiency and accessibility.Public Engagement:
Support efforts to create public-facing content, such as virtual exhibitions and teaching materials. Assist in preparations for workshops, webinars, and public briefings on project outcomes.Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in library and information science, Archival Studies, History, or a related field. At least one year of experience in archival work, including digitization and cataloging. Proficiency with archival management software (e.g., Preservica, ArchivesSpace). Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Familiarity with metadata standards such as Dublin Core or MARC. Ability to work independently and collaboratively.Preferred:
Master's degree in a related field. Experience with transcription and oral history projects. Knowledge of federal archival standards and practices. Interest in American presidential history or related topics.
