An Art Professor teaches foundational art ideas, truths, and methods to students through a combination of classroom instruction and assignments at colleges, trade schools or other institutes. May assist or lead in the creation of the art curriculum to be taught. In addition to instruction, they may assist or lead in research initiatives relating to their field.
The Department of Art and Design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applicants for anticipated part-time, temporary faculty position(s) in Art History for the Fall 2026 semester. The department seeks candidates whose teaching, research, and/or service have prepared them to serve all IUP students.
Teaching:
Successful candidates must be able to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses offered in person, online or through distance education.
Courses may include:
ARHI100 Introduces the elements of visual expression, past and present. Develops an understanding of the processes of art making and the motivations and goals of artists across time. Considers how various factors, including religion, politics, and literature, affect the creation of the arts of any given period or region. AHRI206 Explores the major developments, styles, artists, and cultural contexts of art from prehistoric times through the modern era. Interprets art within historical and cultural framework. Develops an understanding of how artistic expression reflects human experience across time and place. ARHI420 Explores and introduces professions in art museums, art libraries, and visual resources. Includes a brief history of art collecting and an introduction to the major art museums in the United States, including their origins and current status. Presents past and contemporary art practices in museums and special collection environments, including the essential functions of art libraries, visual resources collections, and curatorial practices. Covers current challenges and controversies facing art museums and collections. Provides relevant practical experiences including field trips and guest lectures.
Responsibilities:
Other duties involve participating in departmental committees and advising students. The successful candidate may be asked to work at off-campus sites and/or provide instruction through distance education asynchronously and/or synchronously through zoom technology.
Required:
• Terminal degree in the discipline or related field, OR Master's degree with 7+ years of related professional experience in the discipline. • Experience teaching in college setting. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Faculty members are expected to: Teach courses assigned by the department chair in accordance with departmental, college, and university scheduling requirements. Conduct classes for the required contact hours each academic term and administer final examinations or equivalent assessments as required. Present course content effectively using instructional methods appropriate to the discipline and learning objectives. Evaluate student performance accurately, fairly, and in a timely manner. Perform activities associated with laboratory instruction, fieldwork, studio courses, clinical assignments, or other experiential learning environments, when applicable. Maintain expertise in the discipline through ongoing scholarly, research, creative, and/or professional activities. Engage in service activities that support the department, college, university, profession, and community, as appropriate. Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders in both written and oral formats. Adhere to university policies, academic standards, and professional expectations.
