MULTIDISCIPLINARY ART INSTRUCTOR
Focus:
Oil Painting & Music About the Opportunity I'm an independent artist who has been developing my creative practice largely on my own for several years. I'm now looking for an instructor/mentor who can help me deepen my artistic foundation through structured, ongoing instruction and critique. My two primary areas of interest are oil painting and music. I'm particularly interested in working with someone who is multidisciplinary and can help me understand the fundamentals behind the things I'm creating, rather than simply teaching me how to reproduce a particular subject.
Primary Focus:
Oil Painting I'm currently developing my oil painting practice and want to build a stronger understanding of the medium and the fundamentals behind it. Areas I'm interested in exploring include: Color theory and color mixing Value and light Form and volume Composition Brushwork Edges Paint handling Layering and glazing Building a painting from initial concept to finished work Working from observation and reference Developing expressive and personal approaches to oil painting I'm also interested in understanding why certain painting decisions work, so that I can eventually make those decisions independently.
Secondary Focus:
Music I do not currently have a formal background in music, but I'm interested in beginning to develop one. I'm particularly interested in learning about: Singing and vocal expression Rhythm Melody Musical structure Listening and musical analysis Basic music theory The relationship between sound and visual art How music can contribute to film and animation A background in music performance, composition, songwriting, music production, sound design, or film scoring would therefore be a strong plus. You do not need to be an expert in every area listed above. I'm primarily looking for someone whose creative practice crosses disciplines and who can help me explore connections between them. Teaching Philosophy I'm looking for someone who teaches understanding rather than formulas. For example, rather than simply showing me how to paint a particular object, I want to understand the principles of form, value, color, light, and composition that allow me to approach unfamiliar subjects.
I value:
Thoughtful critique Demonstrations Practical exercises Clear explanations of artistic principles Constructive feedback Encouragement of experimentation Help developing independent problem-solving skills Connections between technical fundamentals and personal expression Session Structure I'm interested in having a session approximately every two weeks, with independent practice between sessions. I'm open to adjusting the frequency depending on the instructor's recommendations and the needs of the work. I'd like the sessions to function as an ongoing mentorship/learning relationship rather than isolated one-time lessons. Format I'm open to both in-person and virtual sessions, with a preference for in-person instruction when possible. For in-person instruction, please include your general location. Ideal Instructor The ideal candidate is: A multidisciplinary artist Experienced in oil painting Comfortable teaching fundamentals Experienced with critique and individualized instruction Curious about multiple creative disciplines Comfortable discussing visual art alongside music/sound Patient and communicative Interested in helping an artist develop their own creative voice Experience with animation, film, visual development, character design, illustration, photography, sculpture, music, or other creative disciplines is a bonus. Please Include Portfolio / website Artistic disciplines and mediums Teaching experience Your teaching philosophy Experience specifically with oil painting Any music/audio background Availability for biweekly sessions Hourly rate or lesson/package pricing Location if offering in-person sessions Examples of student work or testimonials, if available im willing to work with you on an hourly rate. Hourly rate is ~ 20 - 30
