Job Description

Break Teacher (Outdoor Nature School) Wild Child San Diego Nature School is seeking a Break Teacher to support our teaching team in a fully outdoor, nature-based educational program serving children ages 18 months through 13 years old.
Schedule:
Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30
PM Compensation:
$22-$25 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
Additional Compensation:
Candidates who speak German and are willing to teach a weekly German enrichment lesson may earn an additional $90 per lesson taught per week . Position Overview The Break Teacher supports all teaching staff throughout the day by rotating between age groups to provide breaks, classroom coverage, and instructional support. Because our program serves a wide range of ages, this position requires someone who is comfortable transitioning between very different developmental stages, teaching styles, and responsibilities throughout the day. Responsibilities by Age GroupTadpoles (18 Months-2.9 Years) Our youngest group is highly active and requires close supervision and hands-on support.
Responsibilities include:
Staying physically close to children during outdoor exploration Redirecting children back toward the group as needed Repeating instructions frequently and providing consistent guidance Modeling social-emotional skills such as communication, boundary-setting, self-advocacy, and independence Supporting potty learning and diapering as needed Assisting with clothing changes Supporting rest and nap time routines Pollywogs (3-4 Years) This group remains highly active while developing greater independence.
Responsibilities include:
Active supervision and behavior support Facilitating social-emotional learning Assisting with transitions and daily routines Supporting early academic activities during the school year Froglets and Older Students (5+ Years) The older age groups generally require less direct behavior management, but strong relationship-building and group leadership skills are essential.
Responsibilities include:
Leading activities during teacher breaks Using effective group management and call-and-response techniques Facilitating approximately 1.5 hours of academic instruction each day, divided into two learning blocks Supporting students in a tutor-like role while maintaining a positive and engaging learning environment Afternoon Responsibilities In the afternoons, the Break Teacher assists with the combined Pollywogs and 5+ groups during hiking, nature play, and outdoor exploration after the 5+ lead teacher departs. From 3:00 PM-4:30 PM , the Break Teacher may supervise up to five children independently during aftercare.
Responsibilities include:
Providing safe and engaging aftercare activities Communicating with the Director regarding pickup times Reporting late pickups or children who remain after 3:00 PM without prior aftercare registration Outdoor Nature School Environment This is a fully outdoor position that takes place in parks, beaches, trails, and natural areas throughout San Diego County.
Successful candidates will be:
Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions Confident supervising children in public outdoor spaces Able to maintain constant situational awareness Skilled at balancing safety with child-led exploration Physically capable of walking, hiking, swimming, carrying supplies, and remaining actively engaged with children throughout the day Qualifications Preferred qualifications include: Experience working with children in preschool, elementary, camp, outdoor education, or similar settings Strong communication and relationship-building skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Comfort working with children across a wide age range CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) German language proficiency (optional, with additional compensation available for teaching German enrichment lessons) This position is ideal for someone who enjoys spending their days outdoors, values child-led learning, and can confidently support children from toddlerhood through adolescence in a dynamic nature-based environment.

Pay:
