Job Description

DEFINITION

To provide English As a Second Language (ESL) classroom instruction to adult students for classes offered at a correctional center and other locations in Pender County. The teaching assignment for this position includes a combination of day and evening classes. Instruction integrates assessment-driven instruction focused on practical workplace and life skills. The ESL program utilizes scaffolded, adult-tailored teaching strategies to build English fluency, employability and life skills, and self-confidence.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives primary supervision from the Director of ABE/HSE & Special Programs Receives direction from the ESL Coordinator Exercises no supervision

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements P articipate in professional development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate. Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines Participate on committees and in other institutional activities and programs.

Other Important Functions:

Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; Oversee and participate in the field studies and assignment; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate Meet documentation requirements and deadlines as set forth by the program coordinator Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations Principles and procedures of instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment Classroom instructional techniques and procedures Principles and practices of curriculum development and instructional teaching strategies Current trends, research and development in the area of adult education Principles and procedures of record keeping Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration Ability to: Interpret and apply College goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations reading and writing communicating with others operating assigned equipment handling varied tasks simultaneously Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following: walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time operating assigned equipment preparing and presenting instructional material bending, stooping, climbing or lifting up to 50 pounds Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of: making sound decisions responding to questions demonstrating intellectual capabilities evaluating special learning needs of students

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Minimum Required Experience:

Ability to identify students' work and life language needs using formal testing and informal assessments, and to provide continuous, proactive support to ensure student progress and success. Ability to tailor teaching methods for various learning styles and effectively instruct foundational ESL students, including those with no prior English or reading skills.

Minimum Required Education/Training:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with the ability to pursue a teaching certification or adult education credential within two years of hire.

Preferred Experience/Training:

Master's degree in Adult Education or closely related educational field from an accredited college or university . TESOL or K-12 teacher certification. Experience teaching adult ESL Beginners. Experience teaching employability skills. Special Instructions to
