The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for a part-time Teacher, Special Projects for ESL, Job Code 453, Time Schedule - as and when needed at the hourly rate of $37.98/hour- not to exceed 24 hours a week, based on EL enrollment. QUALIFICATIONS-REQUIRED
Valid State of Ohio teaching certificate/licensure;
Ability to work collaboratively with families and students from diverse cultures;
Evidence of successful classroom teaching or counseling
Demonstrated success with urban populations
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Works with the ESL Dept. to design a program which enhances EL education at the middle school level
Monitors EL data, supports enrollment, administers EL identification screener, and, assigns EL interpreter support
Screens new EL students and makes classroom recommendation and placement based on data; monitors and plans for student progress
Administers state mandated and district mandated tests for EL students and works with the building administrators to schedule and organize OELPA annually
Ability to connect EL families with community resources
Incorporates technology in classroom lessons
Determines professional development needs in alignment with the building's 90 day-plan
Provides monthly parent orientation for new families, monitors parent participation data and encourages the full participation of EL parents in school events
Collects data for grants, for parent and student programs, and works with the building administrators to plan and provide PD to EL parents to help them adjust to the US
Provides timely updates of refugee student and parent data
Keeps in close contact with home through phone calls and written communications
Monitors student progress & communicates with parents necessary information
Coordinates the scheduling of interpreters for IEP meetings and classroom support
Communicates frequently with teachers, administrators, and other APS staff of the needs of EL parents and students
Works closely with campus principal in the coordination of the refugee and ESL program including obtaining principal and ESL Specialists' approval in all aspects of the program;
Reports to and carries out other responsibilities as assigned by the building principal or the ESL Learning Specialist.
