Summary:
Provides American Sign Language (ASL) instruction to the community-at-large as well as
WHOLE ME
staff who are not fluent in ASL. Must be able to conduct in-person classes at our office as well as virtual classes. Job Description
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality
  • Must be motivated and prepared to work independently once schedule is set.
  • Plans and implements classroom activities to support student's language development
  • Develop strategies for successful communication.
  • Maintains lesson plans in a file at the WMI Office.
  • Maintains registration and attendance records
  • Insures that all students have paid registration fees
  • Plans, maintains, and shares with Directors of WMI an up-to-date calendar of classes being offered with dates/times/place and duration (1 hour, 2 hour, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, etc.)
  • Directly contacts students and Directors of WMI in case of class cancellations and/or rescheduling
  • Keep all students' personal information confidentially within the confines of the WMI.
  • Keeps Directors of WMI informed and up-to-date with overall general information regarding ASL classes
  • Keeps Directors of WMI informed of critical information and/or situations that occur. (accidents, injuries, bullying, etc.) Job Requirements
  • Currently holds a NYS Teacher's Aide or Instructional Aide certification or in the process of obtaining one or can provide equivalent experience.
  • Adheres to fingerprinting and background check.
  • Native/Fluent in American Sign Language.
Qualifications:

Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Math Ability:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheet software, internet software, and database software.
Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree (B.
A. / B. S.
) from four-year college or university; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Specialized Training:
Fluent in American Sign Language and Proficient in
Understanding of Deaf Culture Certificates and Licenses:
Valid driver's license preferred
