New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach

Craft and Commerce:

Berlin International Film Festival. Utilizing the Berlin International Film Festival as its primary case study, this course investigates the contemporary film industry through the lens of creativity, capital, and global market forces. Students will explore the entire lifecycle of a motion picture, from early development and financing to international sales and distribution, while examining how digital technology, streaming platforms, and evolving consumer habits are reshaping the entertainment economy. At the heart of the curriculum is the Berlinale—a pivotal junction where cinema and commerce converge—providing a rich environment for classroom learning and direct field observation. Through festival screenings, industry sessions, and exposure to professional platforms such as the European Film Market and the Co-Production Market, students from across disciplines will learn to assess film projects by balancing artistic identity with commercial potential. The language of instruction is English, and the course is planned to be offered in Spring 2027. The spring semester runs from January 18 to May 5, 2027, with a week-long break from March 15-21. In this term, the class meets six times for a total of 19 contact hours, with a flexible schedule to allow for participation in the Berlinale, where possible.
