A Chemistry Professor teaches foundational chemistry ideas, truths, and methods to students through a combination of classroom instruction, lab experience, and assignments at colleges, trade schools or other institutes. May assist or lead in the creation of the chemistry curriculum to be taught. In addition to instruction, they may assist or lead in research initiatives relating to their field.
Onsite Job Summary The Department of Chemistry (www.chem.umass.edu) invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, non-tenure track Lecturer position starting Fall semester 2027. The Lecturer will be expected to perform the duties of a lead instructor of General, Organic Chemistry, and/or Inorganic Chemistry courses, teaching lecture sections and laboratory. This position will have a typical teaching load of 2 undergraduate lecture sections per semester or a laboratory course and a lecture section. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal upon successful performance review. The candidate should have a proven commitment to outstanding teaching. A commitment to educational/professional development and service is strongly encouraged. Qualified candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related area at the time of application. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in joining a team of instructors dedicated to excellence in teaching using modern, evidence-based pedagogical approaches, with an emphasis on inclusiveness and accessibility to support the success of a diverse student body. Essential Functions Teach General Chemistry, Organic, Inorganic Chemistry lecture and /or related laboratory courses. Participate in ongoing departmental service. Other Functions Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, equality and inclusiveness. Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean's strategic priorities. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences. Minimum Qualifications Qualified candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related area at the time of application. Basic operating knowledge of instrumentation that is commonly used in teaching laboratories. Any background on mentoring/supervising other members of the department. This may include undergraduate and/or graduate students as well as other faculty and staff. Working Conditions Work is performed in a laboratory or healthcare setting and may involve exposure to chemicals or infectious diseases. Requires standing for extended periods of time and/or use of protective gear. Work Schedule and Work Arrangement Anticipated start date of September 01, 2027 . Monday - Friday, 40 hours a week. Salary Information The University expects to pay within an approximate range between $65,550 and $92,188 for this position.

The low end of this range is based on the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA. The high-end of the pay range reflects an increase above the median salaries at this rank within the department for faculty who may have multiple years of faculty experience. The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
