POSITION SUMMARY
The Junior High Head Boys Basketball Coach provides leadership, instruction, supervision, and organization for the junior high boys basketball program. The coach is responsible for developing student-athletes' basketball skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, character, academic responsibility, and personal growth while maintaining a safe, positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate athletic environment. The coach shall conduct the program in accordance with Fremont RE-2 School District policies and procedures, school athletic expectations, applicable league and state association requirements, and all applicable federal and state laws.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Leadership and Instruction Plan, organize, and supervise all practices, competitions, team activities, and program-related events. Teach the fundamental skills, strategies, techniques, rules, and conditioning appropriate for junior high basketball and the developmental needs of student-athletes. Develop practice plans that promote skill development, teamwork, physical fitness, sportsmanship, safety, and appropriate competitive opportunities. Establish clear program expectations, team rules, attendance requirements, and standards of conduct consistent with District and school policies. Conduct fair and equitable tryouts and team-selection processes in accordance with District procedures. Determine player assignments and playing time using professional judgment and consideration of student safety, readiness, effort, conduct, team needs, and program expectations. Promote consistency and continuity within the District's basketball program by collaborating with the Athletic Director, high school coaching staff, assistant coaches, and other appropriate personnel. Participate in professional development, clinics, meetings, and training necessary to remain current regarding basketball instruction, adolescent development, student safety, and coaching practices. Student-Athlete Development and Supervision Serve as a positive role model and demonstrate integrity, professionalism, respect, fairness, responsibility, and appropriate sportsmanship. Promote the academic success, attendance, conduct, physical well-being, and social-emotional development of student-athletes. Monitor student eligibility in cooperation with the Athletic Director and designated school personnel. Maintain active and appropriate supervision of student-athletes during practices, competitions, team meetings, locker-room use, transportation, and other team activities. Ensure student-athletes remain only in authorized areas and are released to an authorized parent, guardian, transportation provider, or other approved individual following activities. Prohibit and appropriately address hazing, harassment, bullying, discrimination, retaliation, abuse, inappropriate relationships, and other prohibited conduct. Apply team and school discipline consistently and fairly while providing students with appropriate due process and involving the Athletic Director or building administration when necessary. Communicate promptly and professionally with parents or guardians regarding significant concerns involving eligibility, conduct, attendance, safety, injury, or removal from the team. Protect confidential student and employee information and comply with all applicable privacy requirements. Health, Safety, and Emergency Responsibilities Maintain a safe athletic environment and follow all District safety procedures, emergency action plans, and injury-response protocols. Inspect playing areas, facilities, and equipment before use and promptly report unsafe conditions to the Athletic Director or appropriate District personnel. Ensure appropriate warm-up, conditioning, hydration, rest, and injury-prevention practices are incorporated into the program. Immediately remove a student-athlete from participation when a concussion, head injury, serious injury, or other medical concern is suspected. Ensure that a student-athlete removed for a suspected concussion or other medical condition does not return to participation until all required medical clearance and District return-to-play procedures have been completed. Promptly notify the student-athlete's parent or guardian and designated school personnel of injuries, suspected concussions, emergencies, or significant health concerns. Complete and submit required accident, injury, incident, and medical documentation within established District timelines. Follow individual student health plans, emergency care plans, and medical restrictions when provided by authorized school personnel. Make all reports required of a mandatory reporter and immediately report suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with Colorado law and District policy. Complete and maintain all required safety training and certifications, which may include concussion recognition, mental-health education, mandatory reporter training, CPR, first aid, AED use, emergency response, and other District or state-required training. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain accurate rosters, attendance records, eligibility information, schedules, statistics, inventories, awards information, and other required program documentation. Attend required coaches' meetings, preseason meetings, parent meetings, professional development, and other school or District activities associated with the assignment. Understand and follow the appropriate administrative chain of command when addressing concerns, complaints, grievances, or program requests. Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation arrangements, officials, tournament preparation, facility use, and other event-related needs. Ensure that required student participation documents, including physical examinations, parent or guardian consent, emergency information, eligibility verification, and other forms, are completed before participation. Coordinate facility use with the Athletic Director, custodial staff, maintenance personnel, transportation personnel, and other school employees. Provide the Athletic Director with timely information regarding program needs, concerns, incidents, scheduling conflicts, facility issues, and recommended improvements. Complete all required end-of-season responsibilities, including evaluations, inventories, equipment collection, awards information, and program reports. Staff and Volunteer Coordination Provide leadership, direction, and support to assistant coaches, volunteer coaches, student managers, and other assigned program personnel. Clearly communicate the program's philosophy, instructional approach, safety expectations, student-supervision requirements, and standards of conduct. Delegate duties appropriately and monitor their completion. Ensure that only individuals who have received District approval and completed required screening and training participate in coaching, supervision, transportation, or other program responsibilities. Provide the Athletic Director with appropriate feedback regarding assistant coaches and program personnel. Equipment, Facilities, and Financial Responsibilities Assist the Athletic Director in identifying equipment, uniform, supply, and budget needs for the program. Operate within the approved program budget and follow all District purchasing, fundraising, cash-handling, and financial procedures. Do not make purchases, collect money, establish accounts, conduct fundraising, or enter into agreements on behalf of the District without prior authorization. Maintain accurate equipment and uniform records and coordinate the proper issuance, collection, storage, cleaning, repair, and inventory of program property. Promptly report missing, damaged, unsafe, or unusable equipment to the Athletic Director. Teach and reinforce appropriate care and use of District equipment, uniforms, facilities, and other property. Ensure locker rooms, gyms, storage areas, coaches' offices, and other assigned spaces are appropriately supervised, maintained, and secured. Follow established procedures for securing doors, windows, equipment areas, and facilities after practices, competitions, or team activities. Communication and Community Relations Conduct a preseason parent and student-athlete meeting to communicate program expectations, schedules, safety procedures, communication protocols, eligibility standards, and team rules. Maintain professional, timely, and respectful communication with students, families, staff, officials, opponents, volunteers, and community members. Promote participation in the basketball program through appropriate school-based communication and outreach. Coordinate media releases, social media posts, publicity, schedules, scores, and program announcements with the Athletic Director or designated District communications personnel. Use District-approved communication methods when communicating electronically with student-athletes and families. Represent Fremont RE-2 School District professionally and support the District's commitment to good sportsmanship, student development, and positive community relations. Perform other duties related to the assignment as directed by the Athletic Director or Building Principal.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, strategies, conditioning, skill development, and injury-prevention practices. Demonstrated ability to organize, lead, and supervise a junior high athletic program. Ability to work effectively with junior high students and understand their physical, emotional, social, and developmental needs. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with students, parents, staff, administrators, officials, and community members. Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with student-athletes. Ability to exercise sound judgment, remain composed in emergency or high-pressure situations, and resolve concerns appropriately. Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other hours necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the athletic season. Ability to travel with the team to practices, competitions, tournaments, and other assigned activities. Successful completion of all District-required background checks and pre-employment requirements. Completion and maintenance of all certifications and training required by the District, applicable athletic association, league, or Colorado law.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous successful basketball coaching experience, preferably at the junior high or high school level. Previous experience working with adolescents in an educational, athletic, recreational, or youth-development setting. Current CPR, first aid, and AED certification. Education or training in physical education, coaching, kinesiology, exercise science, athletic administration, education, or a related field.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in gymnasiums, locker rooms, school facilities, athletic venues, buses, and other locations associated with the basketball program. The position may involve exposure to loud noise, crowds, temperature changes, inclement weather during travel, physical contact, bodily fluids, and the inherent risks associated with athletic participation. The position requires irregular and extended hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, school breaks, and tournament schedules.
