HOUR POSITION SUMMARY
The Watertown Parks & Recreation Department is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and dependable Seasonal Recreation Assistant Head Swim Coach to assist with the Watertown Recreation Swim Team. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with swimmers of varying ages and abilities and be able to create a positive, encouraging, and organized team environment while helping participants develop their swimming skills, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Practices are typically held five (5) days per week from approximately 5:00 PM-8:30 PM. Coaches are also expected to attend approximately 8 swim meets per season, which are held primarily on Saturdays.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Head Swim Coach with the overall organization and operation of the Watertown Recreation Swim Team. Help plan, write, and implement organized and age-appropriate swim practices. Provide instruction in proper stroke technique, starts, turns, finishes, and other competitive swimming skills. Work with swimmers of varying ages and skill levels to improve technique, endurance, and overall performance. Assist the Head Coach with preparing swim meet lineups, including individual events and relays. Help organize and supervise swimmers during swim meets and ensure swimmers are prepared and report to their events on time. Provide leadership and direction to other swim team coaching staff as needed. Assist with maintaining attendance and swimmer information. Communicate effectively and professionally with swimmers, parents, coaching staff, and Watertown Parks & Recreation staff. Promote teamwork, good sportsmanship, responsibility, and a positive team atmosphere. Maintain a safe, organized, and supportive environment during all practices and meets. Assume additional coaching responsibilities in the absence of the Head Swim Coach as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
Previous competitive swimming and/or swim coaching experience preferred. Knowledge of competitive swimming strokes, starts, turns, relays, and swim meet procedures. Previous experience working with children and youth in a recreational or competitive setting preferred. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work cooperatively with the Head Coach and other members of the coaching staff. Ability to motivate and positively interact with swimmers of varying ages and abilities. Must be dependable and available for scheduled practices and swim meets. CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred.
