Position Summary The Basketball Coach/Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading basketball practices, clinics, classes, and/or recreational programs for youth and participants of varying skill levels. The Coach/Instructor creates a positive, safe, and inclusive environment that promotes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, confidence, and healthy competition while supporting the mission and values of the YMCA. Essential Functions Plan and conduct engaging basketball practices, classes, clinics, and training sessions appropriate for the age and skill level of participants. Teach fundamental basketball skills, including dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, defense, footwork, and game strategies. Provide instruction and constructive feedback to help participants improve their individual skills and overall understanding of the game. Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, discipline, and positive character development. Create an encouraging and inclusive environment where all participants feel welcome and supported. Always maintain appropriate supervision of participants and follow YMCA safety and child protection guidelines. Monitor equipment and playing areas to ensure they are safe and appropriate for program activities. Demonstrate proper techniques and enforce program rules and safety procedures. Adapt instruction and activities to accommodate different ages, abilities, and skill levels. Communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians, volunteers, and YMCA staff. Address participant behavior in a positive and appropriate manner and report concerns to the appropriate YMCA staff member. Arrive on time and prepared for all assigned classes, practices, games, or programs. Maintain accurate attendance and complete required program documentation. Assist with program setup, breakdown, and equipment storage as needed. Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development as required. Follow all YMCA policies, procedures, and standards of conduct. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Previous basketball playing, coaching, or instructional experience preferred. Experience working with children and/or youth preferred. Knowledge of basic basketball rules, techniques, and fundamentals. Ability to effectively communicate and instruct participants in a positive and encouraging manner. Ability to maintain a safe and controlled environment. Must be dependable, punctual, energetic, and professional. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with varying skill levels. Must be able to successfully complete required background screening and YMCA-required training. Certifications CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required within the timeframe established by the YMCA. Additional coaching or youth development certifications are preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, run, bend, stoop, kneel, and move throughout a gymnasium or athletic facility for extended periods. Ability to demonstrate basketball skills and participate in physical activities as needed. Ability to lift and move basketball equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to respond quickly to participant needs and emergency situations. Visual and auditory ability to monitor participants and respond appropriately to safety concerns. Work Environment The Basketball Coach/Instructor will primarily work in a gymnasium, athletic facility, or other YMCA program space. The position may require work during evenings, weekends, and other times based on program schedules.

$17.39 - $23.53 per hour
