Job Description

Job Summary The Part-Time Cheer Coach is responsible for providing a safe, positive, and encouraging environment for participants while teaching the fundamentals of cheerleading. This position plans and leads practices, develops participants' skills and confidence, promotes teamwork and sportsmanship, and serves as a positive role model for youth. The Cheer Coach is expected to support the YMCA's mission and values while maintaining a professional and welcoming environment for participants and families. Essential Functions Plan and conduct age-appropriate cheerleading practices and activities. Teach basic cheerleading skills, including motions, jumps, cheers, dance, tumbling fundamentals, formations, and routines appropriate to the participants' skill levels. Develop progressive practice plans that promote skill development, coordination, strength, flexibility, confidence, and teamwork. Provide positive instruction, encouragement, and constructive feedback to participants. Ensure all activities are conducted in a safe and controlled environment. Follow YMCA safety procedures, emergency protocols, and youth protection standards. Properly supervise participants before, during, and after practices and activities. Prepare participants for performances, showcases, competitions, or other program events, as applicable. Demonstrate and reinforce good sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, discipline, and positive behavior. Build positive relationships with participants and maintain appropriate communication with parents and guardians. Maintain a professional relationship with staff, volunteers, participants, and families. Monitor equipment and facility conditions and report safety concerns, maintenance issues, or damaged equipment to the appropriate staff member. Attend required staff meetings, training sessions, and program orientations. Maintain accurate attendance and other program records as required. Follow YMCA policies, procedures, and standards, including child protection and code of conduct requirements. Assist with program evaluations and provide feedback regarding participant progress and program needs. Perform other duties as assigned. Leadership & Youth Development Create an inclusive environment where every participant feels welcomed, supported, and encouraged. Adapt coaching techniques to accommodate different ages, abilities, experience levels, and learning styles. Encourage participants to set goals and develop confidence through positive reinforcement. Serve as a positive role model and demonstrate appropriate behavior and communication. Recognize and celebrate individual progress and accomplishments. Promote the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility . Safety Responsibilities Maintain active supervision of participants at all times. Inspect the practice area and equipment before use and address or report hazards. Teach proper technique and safe progression of cheerleading skills. Do not permit participants to perform skills beyond their demonstrated ability or without appropriate supervision and equipment. Follow all YMCA emergency, accident, injury, and incident reporting procedures. Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and other required certifications. Follow all YMCA child abuse prevention and youth protection policies. Qualifications Required Previous experience participating in or coaching cheerleading, gymnastics, dance, or a related activity. Ability to effectively work with children and youth. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to create a positive, energetic, and inclusive environment. Ability to demonstrate or teach basic cheerleading skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to pass applicable background screening and meet YMCA employment requirements. Preferred Previous experience coaching youth cheerleading or recreational programs. Competitive cheerleading, gymnastics, dance, or tumbling experience. Experience working with children in a sports, recreation, school, or youth-development setting. CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Relevant cheerleading, coaching, or youth sports certifications. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to: Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout the practice area for extended periods. Demonstrate basic cheerleading movements and skills as appropriate. Assist with demonstrations and instruction. Lift and move program equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds , as required. Maintain the physical ability and stamina necessary to actively supervise and participate in youth activities. Respond quickly to situations requiring participant assistance or emergency response. Work Environment & Schedule Work is primarily performed in a gymnasium, fitness, athletic, or recreational environment. Position requires active participation and may involve extended periods of standing and physical activity. Schedule may include evenings, weekends, and occasional special events or performances. Hours may vary based on program enrollment, seasonal schedules, and facility needs.
