Valparaiso High School Qualifications:
A valid state teacher license is preferred but not required Previous coaching experience is preferred but not required Knowledge and background in technical, engineering, or STEM related field Experience using basic hand and power tools Experience in basic programming Python and/or C++ is preferred but not required Previous experience with VEX V5
Robotics Competitions Job Goal:
Effectively carrying out the aims and objectives of the VEX V5 Robot Challenge program as outlined by the school administration, the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (REC), and the TechPoint Foundation for Youth (when applicable). The Valparaiso High School VEX Robotics Coach will collaborate with the Assistant Coach to mentor and support all student robotics teams. Responsibilities include and may not be limited to organizing and facilitating regular team practices, managing team logistics, providing sufficient technical and strategic support for to students, and attending all tournaments to ensure the success of all students in the program.
Expectations:
Maintain high standards as a teacher, coach, and instructor while advocating the District's skills, mission, and objectives. Create and maintain an environment that emphasizes and promotes sportsmanship, fairness, team collaboration, student integrity, and prioritizing educational and personal growth over competitive results. Effectively communicate and provide frequent updates with participants, parents, teachers, media, administrators, sponsors/donors, and other groups within the community. Undertake all logistical tasks to facilitate the organization of all high school competition teams (register with REC, hold team tryouts and practice, organize and sign up for all team competitions, establish a team calendar, organize transportation to each event, collect permission slips, etc.) Collaborate with the Assistant Coach(es) and/or volunteers, and students to plan and execute team practices at least three times a week for the regular season, focusing on developing technical and competitive skills. Attend all team tournaments, events, and invitational competitions to provide guidance and support to the team. Coordinate parent/guardian meetings to support communication between the robotics program and families. Actively participate in grant writing and sponsorship outreach efforts to secure program funding. Organize and participate in fundraising events to support the team's day-to-day objectives and growth. Manage all purchasing, inventory, and standard maintenance of all new and used robotics equipment and supplies. Ensure all materials are organized and ready for use during team practices and competitions. Provide sufficient training and supervision of students and staff members in the use of machinery and fabrication equipment while maintaining proper safety precautions. Organize and supervise team STEM-related field trips to enhance student's educational experience Coordinate guest speakers to inspire and educate students about robotic automation and STEM-related fields. Manage team vendor accounts, manage team logo artwork, and coordinate the ordering of all team apparel.
