Job Overview The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing safe, engaging, and effective swim instruction to YMCA participants of various ages and skill levels. Instructors create a positive and encouraging learning environment while teaching swimming and water safety skills in accordance with YMCA aquatics programming and curriculum. The Swim Instructor will help participants build confidence, develop swimming skills, and achieve their individual goals while promoting YMCA values. Responsibilities Promote YMCA values while interacting with participants, families, and staff. Provide safe, engaging, and age-appropriate swim instruction. Teach swimming skills, water safety, and proper aquatic techniques according to YMCA curriculum. Adapt instruction to meet the individual needs and abilities of participants. Create a positive, encouraging, and inclusive learning environment. Maintain active supervision of participants throughout each lesson. Evaluate participant skills and provide appropriate feedback and encouragement. Communicate participant progress and concerns with families and supervisors as appropriate. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe teaching environment. Properly use and put away swim lesson equipment and supplies. Follow all YMCA aquatics policies, safety procedures, and emergency protocols. Communicate effectively with other instructors and aquatics staff. Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and in-service training. Maintain accurate attendance and participant progress records as required. Help ensure swim lessons begin and end on time. Necessary Skills & Qualifications YMCA Swim Instructor certification and/or Swim Angelfish Swim Whisper certification preferred. The YMCA can assist interested applicants with obtaining the necessary certification. Strong swimming skills and knowledge of water safety. Ability to successfully demonstrate required swimming and instructional skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Good guest service skills and ability to interact positively with children, adults, and families. Ability to teach participants with a variety of skill levels and abilities. Ability to adapt teaching techniques to meet individual participant needs. Patient, encouraging, and enthusiastic approach to teaching. Ability to remain attentive and focused while supervising participants in the water. Ability to work independently while also communicating and collaborating effectively with other aquatics staff. Reliable and responsible attendance. Ability to participate in required staff training and in-service opportunities. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain as required. Interested in becoming a Swim Instructor? Certification is preferred, but we are willing to help the right candidate obtain their YMCA Swim Instructor and/or Swim Angelfish Swim Whisper certification.
