Job Description
The Freshman Basketball Coach is responsible for leading and developing student-athletes at the freshman level while supporting the overall philosophy and goals of the basketball program. The coach will provide instruction in basketball fundamentals, teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and character development while creating a positive, competitive, and supportive environment for student-athletes. Qualification Requirements:
- Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent required, college degree preferred
- Ability to pass background checks required by the school district and state law
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
- Valid CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Prior experience in coaching or playing basketball at the high school or competitive youth level
- Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategies, and training techniques
Essential Job Functions:
- Plan, organize, and conduct practices focused on fundamental skill development, conditioning, and game strategy
- Instruct athletes on rules, techniques, and sportsmanship in basketball
- Promote the development of sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and respect among all players
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, and team events
- Communicate effectively with players, parents, school staff, and the athletic department
- Support the academic goals of student-athletes by encouraging strong study habits and school engagement
- Check academic progress of players weekly
- Ensure compliance with all school policies and MHSAA rules and regulations
- Support and collaborate with the Varsity Basketball Coach to align program goals and player development
- Maintain a safe environment and respond appropriately to injuries or emergencies
- Ensure any athlete who is injured and requires a doctor or physical assistance care must have a release prior to participating in any practice or meet. This includes working closely with the athletic trainer who has the authority to hold any athlete from practice or competition
- Model professionalism and integrity through consistent attendance and positive leadership at all times
- Other duties as assigned
