About the Role Brooklyn Ascend High School seeks a High School Athletic Coach to lead Athletics & Wellness, the school's foundational physical education and performance program. Athletics & Wellness is a required course designed to develop physical vitality, competitive discipline, and performance literacy. Instruction integrates sport fundamentals, strength and conditioning, endurance development, and health education. Scholars rotate through basketball, soccer, track and field, and cross-training programs while studying nutrition, recovery, mental wellness, and the science of performance. This role develops all scholars in structured physical competency while identifying and preparing student-athletes for Varsity competition. Core Responsibilities Instructional Excellence Teach Athletics & Wellness (Grades 9-12).
Deliver structured instruction in:
Basketball, soccer, and track & field fundamentals Strength, agility, and conditioning systems Cardiovascular endurance development Injury prevention and recovery practices Nutrition and performance science Establish measurable fitness benchmarks aligned to the Athletics Competency Assessment. Differentiate instruction to ensure growth and accessibility for all scholars. Build clear performance progressions aligned to Varsity expectations. Culminating Experiences & Performance Assessment Lead scholars through the Athletics Competency Assessment across endurance, strength, agility, and coordination. Guide scholars in developing a Personal Wellness Plan connecting athletic growth to academic and career aspirations. Support participation in the network-wide Ascend Athletics Expo. Ensure assessments reflect institutional rigor and preparation. Varsity Pipeline & Athletic Leadership Identify and develop emerging student-athletes. Support Varsity teams through coaching, skill development, or competition supervision as assigned. Reinforce sportsmanship, leadership, and resilience. Contribute to school-wide athletic programming and events. Data & Professional Practice Track scholar fitness growth and performance data. Participate in observation and feedback cycles. Analyze outcomes to refine training systems. Maintain safe, structured, and policy-aligned athletic environments. Culture & Scholar Development Maintain disciplined and respectful athletic spaces aligned to school-wide expectations. Partner with the Dean of Culture & Community to reinforce scholar accountability. Serve as an advisor as assigned. Model professionalism, preparation, and character development. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sports Science, or related field. 2+ years of secondary instructional or coaching experience. Preferred Valid New York State certification in Physical Education. Experience leading structured strength and conditioning programs. Experience coaching competitive teams. Experience in a college-preparatory or charter school setting. Typical salary range for experienced high school world language teachers in NYC charter networks starts at $80,000, depending on certification and demonstrated outcomes.
