General Manager/Swim Programs Manager Position Summary The Yakima Athletic Club is working hard to provide an option that keeps young athletes swimming competitively in the Yakima Valley by bringing back a sanctioned IES swim team. A swim team cannot happen without the a Head Coach. The Head Swim Team Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and operation of the USA Swimming-affiliated competitive swim program at the Yakima Athletic Club. This role includes athlete development, staff supervision, program administration, and ensuring full compliance with USA Swimming rules, Safe Sport policies, and athlete protection standards. This is a seasonal part time position, running September - March (6 months) Key Responsibilities Program Leadership & Athlete Development Design and implement a comprehensive seasonal training plan for all levels of swimmers (learn-to-compete through senior/elite). Develop age-appropriate training groups aligned with long-term athlete development principles. Foster a positive, inclusive, and performance-oriented team environment. Prepare swimmers for local, regional, sectional, and national competitions. Attend and coach at swim meets as required. Compliance & USA Swimming Requirements Maintain full compliance with all USA Swimming rules, regulations, and Safe Sport policies . Ensure all athletes, coaches, and staff maintain current USA Swimming registrations. Enforce athlete protection policies, including safe training environments and appropriate coach-athlete interactions. Stay current with USA Swimming rule changes, technical updates, and best practices. Maintain required certifications (listed below). Staff Supervision & Development Recruit, hire, train, and supervise assistant coaches and support staff in line with club hiring procedures and with the assistance of GM. Provide ongoing mentorship, evaluations, and professional development opportunities. Ensure all coaching staff meet USA Swimming certification and background check requirements. Team Administration Collaborate with the Board/Club leadership on budgeting, scheduling, and strategic planning. Manage practice schedules, meet entries, and team communications. Coordinate pool practice time with Swim Programs Manager and ensure proper use of training space. Oversee team records, performance tracking, and progression metrics. Parent & Community Engagement Communicate effectively with parents regarding athlete progress, expectations, and team policies. Promote team values, sportsmanship, and community involvement. Represent the team in league, LSC (Local Swimming Committee), and USA Swimming meetings as needed. Required Qualifications (USA Swimming Compliance) Current USA Swimming Coach Membership in good standing • A minimum of four years of head swimming coach experience at a USA Swimming club; or • Alternatively, in calculating the required four years of experience, USA Swimming may accept head swim coach experience coaching a YMCA team, a college/university program, or other comparable institution that owns a club team. At its sole discretion, USA Swimming may require additional education based on the coach's experience;
Note:
High school and summer league coaching experience does not qualify as relevant experience for this section; or • A minimum of two consecutive years of swim coaching experience with completion of the following within
USA Swimming University:
o American Development Model - Age Group or Senior. o Head Coach Certification (Bronze Level). o Two Legacy Coaching Courses - Jon Urbanchek and one of choice Strong knowledge of stroke mechanics, training methodologies, and competition strategy Preferred Qualifications ASCA (American Swimming Coaches Association) certification (Level 3 or higher preferred) Experience developing swimmers to sectional, national, or collegiate levels Proven leadership and program-building experience Strong organizational and communication skills Core Competencies Leadership that inspires without burning out young athletes Technical expertise in stroke development and race strategy Clear, consistent communication with athletes, parents, and staff Integrity and strict adherence to Safe Sport principles Work Environment & Expectations Flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and travel for meets Regular on-deck coaching and administrative responsibilities Ability to work in a humid pool environment for extended periods
