Job Description
Position Summary The Tennis Professional provides high-quality tennis instruction for youth and adult members while supporting the growth and visibility of YMCA tennis programming. This role delivers private lessons, group clinics, and instructional programs that build skills, confidence, and enjoyment of the game in a welcoming and mission-driven environment. This position requires a minimum on-court instructional commitment of 10 hours per week , with the opportunity to expand lesson hours based on participant demand and instructor initiative. Tennis Professionals are responsible for building and maintaining their instructional schedule through member engagement and program participation. At the YMCA, strengthening community is our cause. The Tennis Professional plays an important role in creating opportunities for individuals of all ages to learn, grow, and connect through tennis. Essential Functions Provide private and group tennis instruction for youth and adult participants of varying ability levels. Plan and deliver structured, age-appropriate lessons that support skill development, confidence, and enjoyment of the game. Lead and support youth clinics, adult clinics, leagues, introductory programming, and seasonal tennis offerings. Build and maintain strong relationships with tennis participants and YMCA members to support engagement and retention. Promote participation in YMCA tennis programs and assist with growing lesson and clinic enrollment. Maintain a minimum of 10 hours per week of on-court instruction and expand instructional availability as participation demand increases. Coordinate lesson scheduling in alignment with YMCA court availability and program needs. Create a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment for youth participants consistent with YMCA Youth Protection standards. Follow all YMCA abuse risk management policies and procedures. Communicate appropriately with parents/guardians regarding youth participant progress when applicable. Demonstrate YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions with members, participants, and staff. Ensure tennis courts and equipment remain safe, organized, and ready for participant use. Follow YMCA emergency procedures and respond appropriately to incidents when necessary. Maintain accurate lesson participation records as requested. Maintain required certifications including CPR/AED and First Aid (or obtain within 30 days of hire). Complete YMCA required Youth Protection training upon hire. Serve as a positive ambassador for the YMCA of Kanawha Valley and support the overall member experience at the Charleston Family YMCA. Schedule Expectations Minimum of 10 hours per week of on-court instruction required Opportunity to increase hours based on lesson demand and instructor availability Availability for afternoons, evenings, and weekends required Qualifications Previous tennis instruction experience with youth and adults required USPTA, ITF or PTR certification required within 6 months of employment Experience working with youth and adults in a structured setting strongly preferred Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends CPR/AED and First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire Work Environment & Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
