The Family Medicine Residency at UAB is a highly prestigious program focused on training the next generation of family medicine physicians. Faculty of this program are a foundational element to graduate medical education—serving as role models, fostering lifelong learning, and ensuring that residents ultimately provide high-quality patient care. Key duties and responsibilities of a family medicine residency faculty member include:
Teaching:
Responsible for teaching residents in various aspects of family medicine. They may develop and deliver lectures, lead small group discussions, conduct bedside teaching, and supervise clinical procedures.
Clinical Supervision:
Responsible for supervising and guiding residents during clinical rotations. This will include direct observation of clinical encounters, providing feedback, and helping residents develop clinical skills.
Curriculum Development:
Contribute to the development and updating of the residency curriculum, which includes didactic and clinical components.
Evaluation:
Evaluate residents, including regular assessments of their clinical skills and academic progress.
Research and Scholarship:
Participate in research projects and scholarly activities related to family medicine and medical education.
Professional Development:
Stay abreast with the latest trends in family medicine and medical education by attending conferences, workshops, and other professional development opportunities.
Administrative Duties:
Administrative responsibilities, such as interviewing, scheduling, coordinating with other faculty members, and communicating with residents, program directors, and other key personnel.
Keys to success:
Experience in medical education. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, preceptors, and regional campus directors. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement educational programs, curriculum, and assessment tools. Knowledge of accreditation standards and experience with program evaluation and quality improvement processes. Commitment to fostering a positive learning environment and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within medical education. Strong organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines effectively. Proficiency in using educational technology and new teaching methods. Consideration will be given to board-certified or board-eligible MD/DOs for full-time or part-time positions. Positions are twelve-month, non-tenure faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Selma is a beautiful and friendly town situated on a bluff high above the rolling waters of the Alabama River just 45 minutes west of Montgomery. This historic city boasts the largest historic district in Alabama with more than 1200 structures dating back to the 1800's. Antebellum and Victorian homes now house specialty shops, museums, restaurants and offices. Visitors from all over the world come to visit sites throughout the community including four museums, Civil War sites and Voting rights landmarks, the famous Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. Today, the city and county have a diversified industrial and business base and is home to some 100 manufacturing facilities, employing over 17,000 workers. Vaughan Regional Medical Center is the sole community provider hospital located in historic Selma, Alabama. The 175-bed Joint Commission-accredited facility employs more than 600 people.
