The Department of Languages & Literatures of Europe & the Americas of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa invites applications for a full time, tenure-track position in 19th-21st century Latin American narrative and Cultural Studies at the level of Assistant Professor to start Fall 2027, pending position clearance and availability of funds. The Department of Languages & Literatures of Europe & the Americas (LLEA) at the University of Hawai?i at Manoa provides students with a broad global foundation in cross-cultural and applied education, embracing Hawai?i as a crossroads of Pacific exchange and cultural connection. Its commitment to student success and practical learning makes it a valuable part of the UH Manoa community. In addition to Spanish and Latin American Studies courses, the department also offers instruction in French, German, Russian, Italian, and Portuguese. At UH Manoa, Spanish is consistently one of the top languages studied, along with Japanese and Hawaiian. LLEA offers an MA in Spanish, and a B.A. in LLEA with specialization in Spanish & Latin American Studies. The LLEA BA also offers tracks in French Studies and German Studies. Minors are offered in Spanish, Latin American & Iberian Studies, French Studies, and German Studies. Our campus welcomes all students but given our responsibilities to the community in which we operate, as part of our strategic mission, we strive to become a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning, a place that is committed to integrating Native Hawaiian language, culture and/or values into its academic and campus environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach graduate courses in area of specialization; Teach undergraduate courses (introductory through advanced) in Spanish and Latin American & Iberian Studies; Advise undergraduate and graduate students; Maintain an active agenda of scholarly research and publication in area(s) of specialization; Participate in graduate committees; Contribute service at the department, college, university, and community levels; Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Latin American Literature, Cultural Studies or closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (ABD will be considered; all requirements for degree must be completed by August 2027); Demonstrated expertise in 19th-21st century Latin American narrative and/or cultural studies; Demonstrated experience in teaching and service; Ability to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; Evidence of scholarly activity and research agenda in the field of specialization; High-level of proficiency in Spanish and English; Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Desirable Qualifications:

Ability to teach and develop courses in US Latino studies and Southern Cone Studies; Research capability in other areas including environmental humanities, folklore, food studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies, tourism studies, or trans-Pacific studies.
