Job Description

Two New Faculty Positions in Computer Science at Berea College The Department of Computer Science at Berea College invites applications for two new full-time faculty positions beginning August 2027: a tenure-track Assistant Professor and a 3-Year Post-Graduate, Post-Doctoral, or Visiting Assistant Professor. These positions reflect sustained growth in Computer and Information Science, now one of the College's largest majors, and our commitment to an interdisciplinary, liberal arts-grounded computing program. We seek colleagues enthusiastic about teaching, mentoring, and scholarship in a department dedicated to active learning, inclusive pedagogy, and connecting computing to human, ethical, and societal contexts. Applicants with a terminal degree by August 2027 in computer science or a closely related field may apply for a newly created tenure-track Assistant Professor position. Applicants with a master's degree in computer science or a closely related field are invited to apply for a three-year faculty position with the possibility of continuance, depending on institutional need and performance. Rank for the three-year position may be post-graduate, post-doctoral, or visiting, depending on qualifications and experience. Candidates may apply for either or both positions and are encouraged to list their preference in the cover letter. The CS Department values small class sizes, close student-faculty interaction, and support for students from varied backgrounds, including those historically underrepresented in computing, as they develop their skills, confidence, and sense of purpose. Colleagues will have the flexibility and support needed to teach across the undergraduate curriculum, develop courses in their areas of specialization, make use of highly flexible spaces in the new Computing, Media, and IT building, and pursue research with undergraduate students. All specialty areas in computing are welcome, with particular interest in areas of strong student demand, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, data science, and computer science education. Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, institutional transcripts, and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin October 14, 2026, and continue until the positions are filled. The department is a collegial community of faculty and staff who work closely with students as learners, advisees, teaching assistants, lab assistants, and student software developers through Berea's distinctive Work College program. Following long-standing tradition and practice at Berea College, this position includes responsibility for supervising, mentoring, and developing students in the College's integrated Work College Program. This supports student learning, career readiness, and the program's learning goals and outcomes. The Work College Program provides a developmental framework that guides student learning while creating a structured mentorship opportunity, with role-specific training that equips faculty and staff mentors to support student development. Faculty and staff mentors play an essential part in helping students connect their work-learning-service experiences with broader academic, professional, and personal development. For faculty, this aligns with Berea's tenure and promotion criteria. These Work College relationships have helped create a strong alumni network that mentors current students professionally.
