Job Description

The Department of Languages, Cultures and Translation invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 15, 2027. This is a 9-month faculty position with a salary range of $75,000- $77,000 in the areas of Modern Japanese or East Asian Studies. Required qualifications. (1) A PhD in Modern Japanese or East Asian Studies, specializing in literature, translation, linguistics, cultural studies, or a closely related field; (2) native/near native proficiency in Japanese; (3) an active research agenda with peer-reviewed publications related to field of specialization; and (4) the ability to teach Japan-related upper-level and graduate courses in different delivery modes, within and beyond the candidate's area of specialization. Preferred qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications: (1) teaching experience in higher education; (2) willingness to develop and teach courses in one or more of the following Japan-related subjects: literature, translation, linguistics, and cultural studies; and (3) demonstrated potential for external funding. Duties will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and service to the department, college, and university. We seek scholars whose research agendas complement existing departmental strengths in literature, theory, cultural studies, film studies, and translation. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university. The Department of Languages, Cultures and Translation engages in innovative research and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels to develop students' language and communication skills, cultural knowledge, intercultural competency, literacy, and critical thinking in order to prepare its graduates for participation in an increasingly global and multilingual society.
