  • 09/30/2026 Job Institution University of Memphis Institution Type College / University Department Department of History Location Tennessee, United States Position Assistant Professor Pending final budgetary approval, the Department of History at The University of Memphis, seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Public History beginning in August 2027.
A Ph.D. in History is required upon appointment. Candidates may specialize in any practice of public history, including but not limited to archival work, cultural resources management, digital history, film and media production, historic preservation, local history, museum exhibition and curation, oral history, and site interpretation. We welcome applications from historians of any time period or geographic area. We seek candidates who will develop connections with Memphis-area institutions. The University of Memphis is a Carnegie R1 institution. The College of Arts and Sciences offers competitive faculty workloads that recognize demonstrated research productivity while balancing research, teaching, and service responsibilities in accordance with College workload policy. Please refer to the CAS Faculty Teaching/Workload Guidelines for additional information. The teaching responsibilities for this position will normally include one survey-level course per semester that satisfies the university's General Education requirement in History. Candidates should also expect to offer upper-level courses and graduate seminars that train students in the practices of public history.
