ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Hennepin Technical College Peace Officer Program is a Minnesota POST-certified program designed to prepare students for licensure and careers in law enforcement. The program integrates academic coursework with practical, skills-based training aligned with Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board requirements. Students gain foundational knowledge in criminal law, patrol procedures, emergency response, community policing, ethics, and communication, along with applied training in defensive tactics, firearms, and scenario-based exercises. The program serves both traditional students and individuals seeking career transitions into law enforcement. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to a student-centered program focused on developing competent, ethical, and community-oriented peace officers prepared to serve diverse communities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This full-time faculty position will: Deliver instruction in law enforcement and peace officer curriculum in classroom, lab, and scenario-based settings Teach courses aligned with Minnesota POST competencies, including but not limited to patrol procedures, criminal law, investigations, use of force, and community relations Facilitate hands-on training environments, including skills-based and scenario training Participate in curriculum development, program assessment, and continuous improvement efforts Provide student academic advising and support student success initiatives Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain current law enforcement knowledge and instructional practices Participate in departmental, campus, and system-wide service activities Support student recruitment and program outreach efforts Minimum Qualifications Education Requirement Associate's degree with a major in law enforcement or criminal justice. Occupational Experience Requirement Four full-time years (or equivalent) of verified related paid work experience in law enforcement, a maximum of two years of this experience may be in corrections. Recency Requirement One year of this work experience shall be within the five years immediately preceding the date of application for the credential field. The recency requirement shall be waived if the individual has two years of successful full-time (or equivalent) postsecondary teaching experience in the credential field within the last five years. Professional Requirement POST (Peace Officers Standards and Training Board of Minnesota) eligible, or a Federal licensed agent with the powers of arrest, the completion of a basic course recognized by a state council, state commission, state board, or state agency which leads to licensing or basic certification as a law enforcement officer, including but not limited to the basic Drug Enforcement Administration's Agent school, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Basic Agent school or the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's uniform patrol course or basic investigators course.   • philosophy of community and technical college education (credit or non-credit course)
  • Faculty shall have a degree in education or three years of successful full-time (or equivalent) teaching experience prior to being hired, or shall be required to complete coursework in the above content areas (or their equivalent) prior to being granted unlimited status.
  • These courses shall be waived for individuals who at the time of hire have: a degree in education, or have documented evidence of successful completion of equivalent coursework in the specified teaching and learning content areas, or have three years of successful, full-time (or equivalent) secondary, postsecondary, industry, or trade apprenticeship teaching experience in the field for which they are being hired.

  • This course shall be waived for individuals who, at the time of hire, have documented evidence of successful completion of equivalent coursework.
(Procedure 3.32.1 College Faculty Credentialing, Part 5, Subpart B.3) Preferred Qualification Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution Minimum of 8 years of full-time law enforcement experience Recent patrol experience within the past 10 years Current or prior certification as a firearms instructor Experience in defensive tactics, use-of-force training, or tactical response Prior teaching, training, or field training officer (FTO) experience Experience using learning management systems such as D2L Brightspace Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and communities Work Shift (Hours / Days of work) This role does not have a fixed schedule; work hours will vary based on class scheduling needs.
