The Instructional Specialist provides instructional leadership, coaching, and support to SBLC instructors and helps ensure that curriculum, assessment, and classroom practices support learner achievement. The ideal candidate is an experienced educator who understands effective instruction, can support and develop other teachers, and is committed to working with adult learners from diverse educational backgrounds. This is a full-time, exempt, year-round position with supervisory responsibilities. Benefits are available after 30 days. Essential ResponsibilitiesInstructional Leadership & Supervision Supervise, mentor, coach, and support instructional staff. Observe instructors and provide constructive feedback to strengthen teaching practices and learner outcomes. Complete instructor evaluations according to SBLC policies and timelines. Support instructors in developing engaging, differentiated lessons for learners at a range of academic levels. Identify instructional challenges and work with instructors and program staff to develop solutions. Support the orientation and onboarding of new instructors. Promote consistent, high-quality instruction across SBLC programs. Curriculum & Instruction Develop, review, and improve curriculum aligned with Maryland Adult Education and Literacy Services (AELS), WIOA, and applicable College and Career Readiness Standards. Support instructors in using assessment data to guide instruction and address individual learner needs. Work with instructional and program staff to develop lesson plans, instructional resources, and integrated education and training/bridge programming. Help ensure that curriculum, instruction, learner placement, and assessment practices are aligned. Research and recommend instructional resources, strategies, and technology that support adult learners. Professional Development In collaboration with the Program Manager, identify instructional staff development needs and develop an annual professional development plan. Plan, coordinate, and facilitate professional development for instructional staff. Track and document instructor professional development to ensure state and program requirements are met. Participate in required DLLR professional development, trainings, and meetings and remain current on adult education best practices. Assessment & Learner Placement Participate in intake and assessment planning as needed. Provide instructional guidance related to learner placement and class assignments. Help staff use assessment results to connect learner needs with appropriate curriculum and instruction. Collaborate with program staff to monitor learner progress and identify opportunities for additional instructional support. Program Support Serve as a member of SBLC's DLLR leadership and data quality teams. Attend required state and program meetings. Collaborate with the Program Manager and other staff to review learner achievement, attendance, assessment, and other program data. Assist with grant reporting and other program administration related to instruction and learner outcomes. Perform other duties related to the position as assigned. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in education, adult education, special education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field. At least 3 years of teaching experience , preferably working with adult learners, secondary students, or learners with diverse educational needs. Demonstrated knowledge of effective instructional practices, lesson planning, curriculum development, and differentiated instruction. Experience using assessment or learner performance data to guide instruction. Strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills. Ability to coach and provide constructive feedback to instructors. Ability to work collaboratively with instructional, program, and administrative staff. Commitment to supporting adult learners with a wide range of academic backgrounds, abilities, and educational experiences. Comfortable using instructional technology and common workplace technology. Preferred Master's degree in education, adult education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field. Experience in adult basic education, GED® preparation, high school equivalency, or workforce education. Experience supervising, coaching, mentoring, or providing professional development to teachers. Familiarity with Maryland Adult Education and Literacy Services (AELS), WIOA, CASAS, GED®, or College and Career Readiness Standards. Experience developing or adapting curriculum for multiple academic levels.
