Westwood Community School District is seeking a dedicated and passionate English Learner (EL) Teacher with the appropriate Michigan EL endorsement to support secondary students in grades 7-12 in acquiring English language proficiency and achieving academic success. The specialist will provide direct support to EL students while partnering with teachers and administrators to strengthen instructional practices that promote language development and equitable access to grade-level content. The position combines direct student services, instructional coaching, compliance oversight, and professional learning to ensure the success of multilingual learners.
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or higher in education or related field from an accredited university. Michigan teaching certification with a valid EL endorsement Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience; secondary experience preferred. Knowledge of language acquisition processes, WIDA standards, culturally responsive teaching practices, and effective instructional strategies for EL students Experience supporting multilingual learners in content-area classrooms. Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills Familiarity with Arabic language and cultures, preferred
Key Responsibilities:
Duties of this job include but are not limited to: Provide direct instruction and language development support to secondary English Learners. Collaborate with content-area teachers to design and implement instructional practices that support language acquisition and academic achievement. Coach teachers in the implementation of sheltered instruction strategies, language objectives, scaffolding techniques, and culturally responsive practices. Develop and deliver professional learning focused on effective instruction for English Learners. Assist teachers in differentiating instruction and assessments to meet the linguistic and academic needs of multilingual learners. Analyze student achievement, language proficiency, attendance, and other data to guide instructional planning and interventions. Coordinate and assist with WIDA screening, ACCESS for ELLs testing, progress monitoring, and EL identification procedures. Monitor EL student progress and maintain compliance with federal, state, and district requirements related to English Learner services. Collaborate with special education staff, interventionists, counselors, and administrators to ensure appropriate supports for EL students. Participate in MTSS and student support meetings to advocate for the needs of multilingual learners. Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, program services, and opportunities for engagement. Support secondary teachers in integrating language development opportunities across all content areas. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to EL services, accommodations, and student progress. Stay current on best practices, research, and state and federal requirements regarding English Learner education. Participate in district and building leadership teams, committees, and school improvement initiatives as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of second-language acquisition and English Learner instructional best practices. Knowledge of WIDA English Language Development Standards and Michigan EL requirements. Ability to coach and support secondary teachers in implementing effective instructional practices for English Learners. Strong understanding of secondary curriculum and content-area literacy. Ability to analyze and interpret student achievement and language proficiency data. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to build collaborative relationships with staff, students, and families. Proficiency with Google Workspace, MiStar, and instructional technology tools. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to take accurate and timely attendance Ability to update grades no later than 2 days after an assignment has been given to students Ability to check and respond to email at least 3 times a day
