POSITION OVERVIEW
The City of Elgin is seeking an energetic and passionate Dance Instructor to teach recreational dance classes for youth and/or adults. Classes may include Hip-hop, ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary. Under the supervision of the Dance Program Coordinator and Community Recreation Supervisor, instructors are responsible for teaching weekly classes, choreographing routines, and assisting with showcases and recitals. This role fosters confidence and skill development in a fun, inclusive environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruct dance classes for all ages (toddler to adult) across various styles Follow provided lesson plans while incorporating personal teaching style Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment Evaluate student progress and provide feedback Communicate effectively with students, parents, and supervisors Prepare studio and equipment before class; maintain cleanliness Attend and assist with rehearsals and performances Follow all City policies and support recreation programs as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
High school diploma and at least 18 years old Minimum 3 years of dance instruction experience preferred Proficiency in ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, and Hip-hop Strong classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills Friendly, enthusiastic, and adaptable to various age groups and skill levels CPR/First Aid certification required within 3 months of hire Experience in parks and recreation and bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are a plus Ability to lift 30 lbs. and work evenings/weekends
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Schedule & Benefits Part-time hours with consistent weekly class schedules; evenings and weekends required. Benefits include a Silver+ Fitness Membership and 25% discount on recreation classes. Compensation based on experience and qualifications.
