Summary:
The Driving Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality driver training to students, acting as both teacher and mentor. They conduct behind-the-wheel lessons and possibly classroom sessions, ensuring students learn safe practices and comply with RMV requirements. Instructors also have a role in the 40-hourdriving mentorship program, guiding parents and modeling excellent driving behavior. They must strictly uphold safety and regulatory standards while fostering a supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Instruction & Mentorship:
Conduct in-car driving following the approved curriculum. Teach students essential driving skills and defensive driving techniques using a patient, encouraging approach. Provide mentorship by sharing personal driving strategies and addressing anxiety. Facilitate or participate in classroom portions as needed, delivering lectures and administering tests.
Compliance & Documentation:
Ensure each student completes state-required instruction time. Maintain accurate lesson records?logging dates, times, topics, and skills?in the student?s file. Complete evaluation forms after each lesson. Verify prerequisites (e.g., valid learner?s permit) before driving. Maintain personal instructor license and report any changes in driving status immediately.
Safety & Vehicle Management:
Assume full responsibility for vehicle control and student safety. Perform safety checks before each session. Be alert and ready to use dual controls to prevent accidents. Maitain a calm demeanor during difficult situations. Prioritize student welfare and never allow unsafe behavior. Keep the training vehicle clean and fueled, report maintenance needs promptly.
Parent & Apprenticeship Engagement:
Interact with parents as part of the mentorship program, potentially leading Parent Orientation classes. Provide updates to parents at drop-off/pick-up. Check student journals periodically. Experienced instructors may serve as mentors for new instructors or apprentices, coaching them and modeling best practices.
Continuous Improvement & Professionalism:
Stay updated on traffic laws and safe driving techniques. Attend in-house training or external workshops. Share ideas for curriculum improvement with the team. Maintain professional conduct and appearance (company-branded attire). Drive courteously at all times to represent the company well.
Qualifications:
Must be a certified driving instructor meeting Massachusetts requirements (typically at least 21 years old, several years of licensed driving experience, clean driving record, and completion of an instructor training program). Strong knowledge of RMV driving rules and teaching techniques. Excellent communication and patience; ability to work with teens as well as adult learners. Physically able to operate dual controls and handle long periods in a car. CPR/first aid certification is a plus. Passion for safety and mentorship.
