Job Description Summary & Additional Information Organization's Summary Statement:
The Department of Economics, within the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS), is a nationally recognized leader in economic research and education. Our faculty, staff, and students work together to advance scholarship, deliver outstanding instruction, and foster a diverse and inclusive community.
Position Description:
The Department of Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position beginning August 23, 2026. This is a full-time, nine-month (academic year) appointment with an initial one-year contract and the possibility of renewal for three- to five-year terms. The teaching load will be a maximum of three courses per semester. Approximately 90% of the Lecturer's responsibilities will involve teaching undergraduate courses, with the remaining effort devoted to service activities. The position will be dedicated to teaching within both the Department of Economics and the interdisciplinary Social Data Science major. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in research methods and proficiency in programming languages such as R and Python. Social Data Science courses taught by this lecturer may include "Python Programming for Data Science," "Data Science for Social Science," or similar courses. Economics courses may include introductory courses such as "Principles of Microeconomics/Macroeconomics" or "Applied Economic Statistics," as well as data-oriented courses such as "The Economics of Big Data," "Using Big Data to Solve Social and Economic Problems," or similar data-oriented courses developed by the instructor. Salary is competitive, and there may be opportunities for additional compensation for teaching in winter and summer sessions. Minimum Qualifications:
ABD (Ph.D. preferred) in Economics, Data Science, Information Science, or a closely related field and evidence of excellence in teaching, especially in undergraduate education.
Physical Demands:
Spend long hours sitting and using computers. Light lifting of materials and supplies. Walking to class and departmental meetings.
