Resume Cover letter References (minimum of three) Purpose of Position The University of Texas at Arlington seeks an innovative, collaborative, and faculty-centered leader to serve as Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The Director provides strategic leadership for UTA's institution-wide efforts to advance excellence in teaching and learning across face-to-face, hybrid, online, and emerging instructional modalities. The CTL serves as the University's primary faculty-facing resource for the practice of teaching, including course and curriculum design, assessment of student learning, teaching consultation, instructional innovation, inclusive and accessible teaching, effective use of learning technologies, faculty learning communities, teaching credentials, and strategic course transformation. The Center provides faculty with a clear and accessible point of entry for teaching support while partnering closely with Faculty Success, colleges and academic departments, the Center for Distance Education, the Office of Information Technology, Student Success, University Analytics, UTA Libraries, and other University units. Essential Functions Leads a comprehensive university-wide faculty-development strategy encompassing individual consultations, teaching observations and feedback, faculty learning communities, cohort-based programs, certificates and credentials, Faculty Fellows, workshops, asynchronous resources, and department- and program-level initiatives. Advances evidence-based approaches to course design, assessment of student learning, accessible and effective teaching practices, active learning, online and hybrid pedagogy, adult learning, artificial intelligence, learning analytics, and emerging instructional technologies. Provides vision, leadership, and strategic direction for the Center for Teaching and Learning; develops and continuously refines a coherent portfolio of programs and services aligned with UTA 2030, college priorities, and emerging needs in teaching and learning. Establishes the CTL as the University's clear and trusted faculty-facing resource for teaching practice and leads the transition to a modern, visible, responsive, and strategically aligned Center for Teaching and Learning. Develops strategic partnerships with colleges, departments, academic programs, and University units to support course and curriculum transformation, with particular attention to high-enrollment, gateway, high-DFW, and other strategically important courses and programs. Collaborates with the Center for Distance Education and other partners to connect faculty development with course review, redesign, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement. Builds strong relationships with faculty across disciplines, appointment types, ranks, and instructional modalities. Develops and implements communication, outreach, and engagement strategies that increase awareness and use of CTL programs and position the Center as an accessible point of entry for teaching support. Maintains clear service boundaries with Faculty Success and other partner units and ensures CTL consultation and developmental support remain confidential, formative, and distinct from formal personnel evaluation. Develops and oversees a comprehensive assessment framework for CTL programs and services that evaluates faculty reach, service quality, changes in teaching practice, course-design quality, strategic course transformation, and, where evidence permits, contributions to student and institutional outcomes. Produces an annual CTL impact report and dashboard and uses evidence to guide continuous improvement and resource decisions. Recruits, supervises, develops, and evaluates CTL staff; builds a collaborative and service-oriented team; develops and administers the Center's budget; and strategically deploys professional staff, Faculty Fellows, stipends, mini-grants, professional-development funds, and other resources. Establishes and works collaboratively with a CTL Advisory Council to identify priorities, strengthen communication, and review evidence of impact. Represents the CTL and UTA in University, UT System, regional, and national conversations related to teaching excellence, faculty development, learning science, instructional innovation, and student success; contributes to University-level planning and initiatives related to teaching and learning. Performs other duties as assigned Required Qualifications Master's degree from an accredited institution in education, higher education, instructional design, curriculum and instruction, learning sciences, an academic discipline, or a relevant field and five (5) years of related experience, or eleven (11) years of an equivalent combination of education and experience. Significant progressively responsible experience in faculty development, teaching and learning, instructional development, academic innovation, or a closely related area in higher education. Demonstrated knowledge of research and effective practices in college teaching, learning science, course design, and assessment of student learning. Demonstrated experience developing and leading faculty-development programs or teaching-and-learning initiatives. Demonstrated ability to establish productive relationships with faculty and academic leaders across disciplines. Experience leading organizational change, developing new programs or services, or substantially redesigning an existing academic-support operation. Demonstrated experience assessing programs and using evidence to guide improvement and communicate impact. Experience supervising professional and administrative staff and managing programs, projects, and resources. Excellent communication, facilitation, consultation, and organizational skills. Preferred Qualifications Earned doctorate or other terminal degree. Experience teaching at the college or university level. Leadership experience in a center for teaching and learning, faculty-development center, academic innovation unit, or comparable university organization. Experience at a research university (R1) or other large, complex higher-education institution. Demonstrated expertise in several of the following areas: faculty development, learning science, course and curriculum design, assessment, accessible and effective teaching practices, online/hybrid education, artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, learning analytics, faculty learning communities, or scholarship of teaching and learning. Experience leading or coordinating a Faculty Fellows program, credentialing, cohort-based development, course redesign, or departmental teaching-improvement initiatives. Experience partnering with academic deans, department chairs, faculty governance, information technology, institutional research/analytics, and student-success organizations. Demonstrated ability to connect teaching-and-learning initiatives with institutional strategic goals and student-success priorities. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Credibility with faculty and the ability to build trust across disciplinary and organizational boundaries. Ability to translate research on teaching and learning into practical faculty support. Strategic thinking combined with the ability to move initiatives from concept to implementation. Facility with data, assessment, and evidence-informed continuous improvement. Understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with teaching across multiple modalities. Ability to balance innovation with the varied cultures, traditions, and pedagogical needs of academic disciplines. Skill in developing partnerships in a distributed University environment rather than attempting to centralize all teaching-related functions within the CTL. Commitment to accessible and effective learning environments for UTA students. Work Schedule Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm. Hybrid work may be considered following successful completion of the probationary period, based on departmental needs and university policy.
