The Extended Care Director is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing a high-quality after-school extended care program for elementary and middle school students. This individual will create a structured, engaging enrichment program that balances academic support, creative exploration, physical activity, and social-emotional development. The Director will provide leadership and supervision for Extended Care Aides, ensure a safe and welcoming environment, and foster meaningful experiences that support the needs of students and families after the school day ends. The ideal candidate has experience developing and managing extended care or after-school programs, a background in education/teaching, and a passion for creating engaging opportunities for children to learn, play, and grow. Key Responsibilities Program Development & Leadership Design and implement a comprehensive after-school extended care program for elementary and middle school students. Create a structured schedule that includes enrichment activities, arts and crafts, games, sports, outdoor play, homework support, and supervised free time. Develop age-appropriate programming that promotes creativity, curiosity, collaboration, leadership, and social-emotional growth. Evaluate program effectiveness and continually enhance offerings based on student interests and developmental needs. Plan and coordinate special events, themed activities, clubs, and seasonal programs. Student Engagement & Supervision Foster a safe, positive, inclusive, and nurturing environment for all students. Build strong relationships with students while maintaining appropriate expectations for behavior and participation. Ensure students have a healthy balance of structured activities, physical activity, homework time, and opportunities for relaxation and social interaction. Implement and uphold behavior management policies consistent with the school's philosophy and values. Staff Supervision Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate Extended Care Aides and other program staff. Create staff schedules and assign responsibilities to ensure appropriate student supervision and program delivery. Conduct regular team meetings and provide coaching and professional development for staff. Ensure compliance with all school policies, safety procedures, and child supervision requirements. Family & School Communication Along with designated school administrators, serve as the point of contact for parents regarding the Extended Care program. Communicate regularly with families regarding schedules, activities, student needs, and program updates. Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, and support staff to ensure continuity between the school day and after-school program. Operations & Administration Manage program registration, attendance tracking, and student records. Work with designated administrator to develop and oversee program budgets, supplies, and materials. Maintain compliance with applicable health, safety, and licensing requirements. Monitor and maintain facilities, equipment, and activity spaces used during extended care hours. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Education, Child Development, Recreation, or a related field preferred. California Teaching Credential preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience in education, teaching, youth development, after-school programming, or extended care administration. Demonstrated experience creating and implementing successful extended care or enrichment programs. Experience supervising, mentoring, and evaluating staff. Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills. Ability to engage and connect with students across elementary and middle school grade levels. Knowledge of child development and age-appropriate programming. Current CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain). Work Schedule This is a 10-month per year position that operates according to the school year (mid-August to early June). The Extended Care Director will be scheduled to work from 9:30 AM to 6 PM each day. The Extended Care Program operates Monday through Friday from 1:30 PM to 6 PM. On minimum days (usually each Wednesday), the program will operate from 11:30 AM to 6 PM. The Extended Care Director will begin setting up one hour in advance of the program start for that day. From 9:30 AM until the set up time begins, the Extended Care Director will assist in other areas of the school, as needed, including assisting in reception/administrative roles and substitute roles as a Substitute Teacher, Instructional Assistant or Yard Supervisor. Additional time may be required for planning, staff supervision, family communication, special events, and program development. Success in This Role A successful Extended Care Director will build a program that students look forward to attending each day—one that thoughtfully balances enrichment activities, crafts, games, sports, homework support, social connection, and unstructured play while maintaining a safe, organized, and engaging environment. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while supervising students indoors and outdoors. Ability to move throughout classrooms, playgrounds, cafeterias, and other campus areas during the workday. Ability to supervise and interact with children in a variety of settings, including outdoor activities. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach as needed to assist students and manage program activities. Ability to lift, carry, and move materials, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Ability to respond quickly to student needs, emergencies, and safety situations. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and in writing. Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers, printers, copy machines, walkie talkies, and telephones. Ability to visually monitor student activities and maintain awareness of safety concerns. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to maintain regular attendance and perform the essential functions of the position.
