Instructional Supervisor - RELA 9-12

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Working with the Coordinating Supervisor on all facets of program planning and development and associated budgets (including grants) for the Reading/English Language Arts office, including identification of program priorities in the Strategic Plan;
  • Assisting with the coordination of all facets of curriculum and program evaluation for the 9-12 Reading/English Language Arts program;
  • Supporting all facets of the 9-12 Reading/English Language Arts program by providing ongoing staff training, and developing programs of study to upgrade the skills and knowledge base on the 9-12 Reading/English Language Arts teaching staff;
  • Coordinating the review, approval, acquisition, and distribution of appropriate equipment, materials and print and non-print resources to support staff and students for Reading/English Language Arts program planning, development, and implementation, including Special Education and Multilingual Learners;
  • Manages budget, purchase orders, and resource allocations related to 9-12 Reading/English Language Arts program;
  • Assist with providing ongoing interaction and articulation within and across the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, other departments and divisions, and at the systemic level, emphasizing strategic planning and problem solving aligned with the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards;
  • Understanding of the Framework for Teaching (FfT) and the ability to conduct formal and informal observations; and
  • Other duties as required.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Sound knowledge, skill and understanding related to Reading/English Language Arts;
  • Demonstrated administrative, public speaking and human relations skills;
  • Demonstrated expertise in writing (required) and administering grants (preferred);
  • Knowledge of current research and trends in Reading/English Language Arts;
  • Demonstrated competence in developing and leading staff development sessions for teachers and/or principals and parents;
  • Thorough knowledge of Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards, assessments, and alternative assessments 9-12;
  • Experience in personnel and program evaluation;
  • Extensive expertise in the design, implementation, and evaluation of professional development programs and initiatives; and
  • Excellent written and oral communication and technology skills.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Master?s degree from an accredited college or university in English, with Reading Certification (preferred) or Master?s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with Reading Certification.? Minimum of five (5) years successful instructional experience in Secondary Reading/English Language Arts.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Holds or is eligible for a valid professional license in Administrator I (historical) or Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, or Principal issued by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE); endorsement in secondary English (or Reading/English Language Arts) (grades 6-12). ?Administrator II endorsement preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists in overseeing and providing guidance to the unit staff/teachers.
