Job Description

The Department of Academic Success at Jackson State University is accepting applications for its Academic Advisor position. Provides academic advisement for prospective and current students within specified undergraduate academic majors or equivalent units of the university; advise freshmen, sophomore, and transfer students on the general education curriculum and major requirements. Nights and weekends may seldom be assigned during high enrollment periods; assist students through career exploration, academic plans, class schedules, and other academic support strategies to facilitate academic development toward degree completion; complete pre-registration/registration schedules, add(s)/drop(s), withdrawals, and change of major requests; Perform degree audits; monitor student progress on a systematic basis throughout the year and attend to student inquiries and resolve academic concerns; teach University Success courses as needed; create individualized action plans to help each student achieve academic goals; work under the direction of the Associate Director of Advising Administration to complete requested reports for Academic Affairs or other relevant university departments; update university programs and curricula; maintain appropriate files and records; attend all meetings and programs in the unit; serve on unit and university committees as requested; perform other duties as assigned. Bachelor's Degree required (master's degree preferred). Experience working in higher education, student services, academic advising, counseling, or related student support environments. Knowledge of student support services, university policies and procedures, and student success and retention practices. Knowledge of student information systems, advising technologies, and computer applications. Knowledge of academic support strategies and methods. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
