The position works with former students to facilitate re-enrollment and connects them with appropriate campus resources and academic departments. The advisor manages a student caseload, monitors academic progress, and provides support to students navigating academic standing. The role collaborates with faculty and campus offices to ensure coordinated and comprehensive student support. The advisor also contributes to orientation, special projects, and initiatives focused on student success and retention. Primary Purpose Reporting to the Director of the Office of Academic Advising, the Student Success Advisor is a member of the academic advising team and conducts outreach to students who previously attended Rhode Island College (RIC) and left without having completed their degree. The Student Success Advisor provides comprehensive support to undergraduate students to promote academic success and persistence from pre-matriculation through graduation. This role involves proactive outreach, individualized advising, and coordination of the process of re-enrollment to finish their degree. The Student Success Advisor also monitors and engages regularly with a caseload of first, and second-year undergraduate students at Rhode Island College and students navigating academic standing. With the OAA team, the Student Success Advisor provides developmental and transformative support for specified cohorts of students that include but are not limited to: advising, new student registration, and providing proactive outreach to students. Essential Duties Conduct outreach to cohorts of students who previously attended Rhode Island College and left without having completed their degree. Provide guidance, services and academic advisement on their potential return to the College to finish their degree; connect students to various resources such as RI Reconnect as needed. Once re-enrolled, connect students to appropriate academic departments and assigned advisor. Collaborate with Advising, Financial Aid, Admissions, Registrar, and other offices regarding student cases in question. Accurately document, maintain, and track student interactions, information, and progression through internal systems such as PeopleSoft, Starfish, and CRM. Assist in identifying the needs of students; develop, implement and deliver educational, developmental and transformative advising services and activities designed to meet those needs. Develop, partner, facilitate, and execute special projects related to advising and divisional goals. Advise an identified cohort of students, both individually and in group settings, to ensure progress toward timely graduation, exploring/undecided students and students from specified schools; provide culturally responsive advising and assist students with registering for courses and supporting them through important deadlines including add/drop and withdrawals. Perform essential and administrative advising functions in a timely manner. Functions include but are not limited to: pre-registration surveying, caseload audits, post-orientation and/or end-of-semester, mid-term grade outreach and any other emergent caseload management practices. Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of academic requirements, resources, policies and procedures for use in serving students and participate in trainings as needed Work closely with key student services offices to ensure seamless re-enrollment and advising support for students and collaborate with faculty and various academic departments as needed. Regularly collaborate, engage and cross-train with faculty from various academic departments to ensure strong knowledge of academic requirements and policies within specified majors and school as well as coordinate opportunities for first year students; liaise and partner with academic programs as needed. Liaise and partner with Career and Life Design; ensure students have access to comprehensive and streamlined support as they navigate from major exploration to career readiness. Serve as an academic coach within the Academic Standing Process and Program; delivering early intervention services, connecting campus resources and communicate process with students, while reporting outcomes to the Director, and partnering with student services offices. Participate in advising sessions at all New Student Orientation sessions for all new students, including transfers; support the high-quality advisement of new students during key enrollment periods for new students. Participate in initial and ongoing trainings, including but not limited to advising, curriculum requirements, policy updates, diversity and inclusion, financial aid, teambuilding, etc. Maintain professional and effective relationships with students, faculty, staff and various stakeholders to ensure a high-quality experience for all students. Collaborate with other offices to provide support services of students; these offices include but are not limited to Career & Life Design, Preparatory Enrollment Program, Student Support Services, Student Life, Counseling, Health Services, Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid, Unity Center, and New Student Programs. Participate in and attend key college events, including but not limited to admissions yield events, New Student Orientation and Welcome Weekend. Support the Director and advising team in maintaining relevant data, activity, and assessment for annual reporting. Occasional Duties Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Academic Advising. Work evening and weekend hours as required to meet the needs of students. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Work collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive, and student-centered environment, and with students of various learning styles, cultures, identities, and life experiences. Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of academic advising as applied to student educational and developmental needs. Demonstrated understanding of student development. General understanding of Financial Aid processes and policies, including the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policies, procedures and federal SAP guidelines. Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality (FERPA). Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the ability to work with a highly diverse population. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve shared outcomes. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
Required Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's Degree.
Experience:
Experience working with students. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in college student personnel services, higher education, counseling or a related field. Academic advising experience. Experience working with college policy, college curriculum, academic coaching and campus resources in an advising setting. Be proficient in student record systems, preferably Peoplesoft. Experience with retention software and data analysis, preferably Starfish. Bilingual in English/ Spanish (verbal and written). Does this position have Direct Reports?
