Job Description

SCOPE OF WORK
This position provides holistic academic and resource support to students during their first year of college. The First Year Experience Advisor helps students understand and navigate College systems, academic requirements, policies, procedures, and available resources that support student success. The advisor provides academic advising, educational planning, referrals, follow-up support, and student success programming or classes, as assigned. The position works closely with academic advisors, First Year Experience faculty, and staff throughout the Center for Student Success to provide coordinated support and respond to academic, financial, personal, and basic-needs barriers that may affect student persistence. The First Year Experience Advisor coordinates regular outreach and follow-up meetings with first-year students, monitors academic progress and early alerts, maintains accurate advising records, and assists students in transitioning to the appropriate continuing-student, program-specific, career, or upper division advisor. The position also supports the collection, review, and reporting of first-year student data across all NWIC locations to assist with program assessment and continuous improvement. Occasional travel to NWIC extended campus sites may be required. The advisor may also provide support to eligible students participating in the Passport program in coordination with other College staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Services Team Duties 1. Improve student persistence and graduation rate, focusing specifically on first-year experience (FYE) students. 2. Collaborate with Center for Student Success staff on student activities and events. 3. Organize quarterly new student orientation & maintain online orientation. 4. Assist with data collection and implementation of Advising Assessment Plan. 5. Assist and support initiatives supporting the College's Commitment to Student Success. 6. Participate in other student support services activities or committees as requested by supervisor First-Year Experience Advising Duties 1. Help students understand and navigate College systems, policies, procedures, academic requirements, and available resources. 2. Provide academic advising to first-year students, including support with course selection, program requirements, prerequisites, concentrations, and educational planning. 3. Support students who are exploring or undecided about their program of study in identifying academic and career interests and developing an appropriate educational plan. 4. Develop and maintain a consistent outreach schedule for first-year students, including individual check-ins at key points throughout each quarter. 5. Review attendance, academic progress, early alerts, and other available indicators to identify students who may need additional support. 6. Provide timely academic intervention, encouragement, and problem-solving support to help students remain enrolled and make progress toward their educational goals. 7. Help students identify barriers to academic success and develop strategies related to time management, stress management, study skills, organization, and other first-year transition needs. 8. Connect students with tutoring, mentoring, study groups, financial aid, basic-needs assistance, counseling, disability support, and other appropriate College or community resources. 9. Coordinate referrals and follow up with students to determine whether they successfully connected with the referred service and received the support needed. 10. Help students understand financial aid and scholarship processes, complete required application steps, and connect with Financial Aid staff for questions requiring specialized guidance. 11. Help eligible students access book vouchers, emergency assistance, and other educational or basic needs supports in coordination with the appropriate College offices. 12. Collaborate with First Year Experience faculty, academic advisors, and other student support staff to align classroom, advising, and intervention efforts. 13. Support the implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of NWIC's First Year Experience program. 14. Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential advising notes, student records, referrals, and follow-up documentation in the College's designated systems. 15. Develop and document transition plans that connect students with the appropriate continuing-student, program-specific, career, or upper-division advisor after the first year. 16. Conduct outreach to current and former foster youth and unaccompanied youth who have experienced homelessness to encourage preparation for, enrollment in, and completion of higher education, registered apprenticeship, or pre-apprenticeship programs. 17. Maintain an accurate and confidential database of students participating in the Passport program, including student contacts, services, referrals, and required program information. 18. Meet regularly with Passport students to provide individualized advising, resource coordination, encouragement, and follow-up. 19. Collaborate with Financial Aid, Admissions, the Registrar, academic advisors, and other Passport support team members to ensure eligible students receive coordinated services and available financial supports. 20. Participate in required Passport program training, reporting, assessment, and institutional implementation activities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
There are no supervisory responsibilities currently associated with this position.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
to perform this position successfully: Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in adult or higher education, student affairs, human services, social work, or related field. Previous work experience in higher education or academic advising Proven ability to work in a team environment in order to achieve strategic and departmental goals. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work well with all people. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree with experience in education, student affairs or related field, including knowledge and skills related to Student Development Theory. Two years of full-time academic advising, student support, case management, career advising, or related experience. Experience with first-generation college, low-income, ethnically diverse individuals and groups, and/or persons with disabilities. Previous experience working with Native Americans in a tribal college or in the community.
Other Qualifications:
Must have a current driver's license and driving abstract that meets employer qualifications for insurability; must have as well as the ability to travel on occasion.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a working knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet and Word Processing software and Database systems.

Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships. Ability to work under stressful situations. Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing. Must have excellent interpersonal/people skills. Ability to be a self-starter and sustain a high level of activity with minimal supervision.
