Essential Elements:
Print Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Principal and the Director of Student Services, teach children with various disabling conditions.
Representative Duties:
Deliver a daily academic program to pupils in a special class on a regular school campus. Develop individual and group behavior management programs. Develop and implement individualized educational programs in cooperation with parents and other team members. Plan and implement appropriate integration experiences for pupils. Provide individualized instruction in appropriate areas of pre-academics/academics, language, self-help, motor, pre-vocational, and socialization skills as appropriate. Collaborate, as needed, with other professionals involved in the program for the child with disabilities, such as Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, Psychologists, and regular classroom teachers. Adjust educational schedule on an individual basis to coordinate with OT, PT speech therapist and regular classroom teacher. Communicate with parents. Assess, create, adapt and apply learning methods and materials to meet needs of the children. Train and guide Special Education Assistants assigned to the program. Participate as a member of the IEP Team in:
  • assessing and planning activities for pupils enrolled in program.
  • curriculum development and classroom instruction.
  • classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
  • child guidance principles and practices related to students with special education needs.
  • problems and concerns of students with special needs.
  • curriculum and lesson plan development to meet IEP goals.
  • equipment operation related to special education students.
  • terminology involved in special education programs.
  • behavior modification techniques.
Ability to:
Instruct special education students in individualized tasks to achieve IEP goals. Understand and relate to children with special needs. Operate and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment. Monitor and evaluate student progress. Train and provide work direction to others. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Maintain records and prepare reports. Compile and verify data and prepare reports. Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Work independently with little direction. Meet schedules and time lines. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
