What they do

An Elementary School Teacher teaches elementary school students, usually children ages 5 - 11 who are in kindergarten through fifth or sixth grade, in a public or private school. Teaches all subjects, including reading, writing, math, social studies and science, to one class throughout the school year. Plans curriculum and assesses student progress, manages student behavior and communicates with school parents. May specialize in teaching music, art or physical education, or teach students that are learning English, or work with students with learning disabilities or emotional and behavioral disorders.

Job Description

Responsibilities
  • Instruct English Learner students individually or in groups in oral language activities that foster the child's participation in the school's total program.
  • Provide written language activities until the student is ready to join an existing language arts group within the school.
  • Recommend appropriate modifications of the child's regular classroom assignments with respect to the existing English language level.
  • Assist in developing a sequential ESL Program.
  • Assist in developing/assembling relevant assessment materials.
  • Assist in developing/assembling materials for classroom use. Qualifications
  • Certification as Teacher of English as a Second Language.
  • Experience as teacher of English as a Second Language in a public school setting preferred.
  • Fluency in a second language preferred.
  • Extended experience living in another culture preferred.
Supplemental Information SALARY:
Per ASC/Andover Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
