Montessori Teacher & Floater
Job Description
Montessori Teacher/Floater Pine Grove Montessori School | Falmouth, Maine Pine Grove Montessori School is looking for a caring, dependable, and flexible Teacher/Floater to join our school community. This is a unique teaching position for someone who enjoys getting to know children across different classrooms, working collaboratively with a variety of teachers, and jumping in wherever support is needed. Our Teacher/Floater works with children across our early childhood classrooms, providing classroom support, covering staff breaks and absences, assisting with transitions, and helping with school-wide needs throughout the day. This position also includes several After Care shifts each week from 3:30-5:30 PM . About the Role Within our classrooms, the Teacher/Floater works primarily as an assistant to the Lead Teacher. An important part of this role is helping maintain the calm, purposeful environment that allows Montessori lessons and children's independent work to happen successfully. Rather than leading the classroom, you'll often be the person noticing what is happening around it—helping a child who needs the bathroom, gently redirecting a child who needs support, assisting with a transition, preparing materials, or stepping in with a child so the Lead Teacher can continue a lesson. Because this position floats throughout the school, no two days will look exactly the same! What You'll Do Support Lead Teachers in maintaining calm, respectful, and engaging Montessori classroom environments. Help protect the Montessori work cycle by supporting children and minimizing unnecessary interruptions during lessons and independent work. Observe children and respond proactively when they need assistance, redirection, or additional support. Encourage independence and help children care for themselves, their materials, and their classroom environment. Model grace and courtesy, respectful communication, and positive interactions. Assist with bathroom trips, toileting, handwashing, clothing, meals and snacks, and other daily routines. Support arrival, dismissal, outdoor time, meals, rest periods, and other classroom transitions. Provide active and attentive supervision indoors and outdoors. Cover staff breaks, meetings, absences, planning time, and other classroom staffing needs. Move between classrooms and age groups throughout the school day as needed. Help organize classroom materials, complete classroom projects, and assist with school-wide and administrative tasks when not providing direct classroom coverage. Work collaboratively with Lead Teachers, assistant teachers, and administration. Work assigned After Care shifts, providing children with a safe and engaging end to their school day. Who We're Looking For We're looking for someone who is patient, proactive, dependable, and comfortable with change . A successful floater needs to be able to walk into different classrooms, learn their routines, notice where help is needed, and take initiative while also respecting the direction and classroom environment established by each Lead Teacher.
Candidates should have:
Previous experience working with young children in early childhood education, child care, a school, recreation program, or a similar setting. Experience working with different early childhood ages and developmental stages. Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices. Experience supporting children with a variety of developmental, behavioral, learning, and social-emotional needs. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to build warm and respectful relationships with children. The ability to work collaboratively with different teachers and staff members. Reliability, punctuality, flexibility, and the ability to remain calm and responsive in a busy early childhood environment. The ability to meet applicable Maine DHHS child care licensing and background check requirements. Coursework, a degree, credential, or training in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Education, or a related field is preferred. Previous Montessori experience or training is preferred but not required. Candidates should have an interest in Montessori education and a willingness to learn and grow within the Montessori approach. Training & Professional Development Pine Grove is committed to supporting the continued learning and professional growth of our staff. Employees participate in ongoing professional development related to early childhood education, child development, health and safety, and Montessori philosophy and practice. The Teacher/Floater will be expected to complete and maintain required Maine DHHS trainings, professional development hours, CPR/First Aid certification, Mandated Reporter training, and other applicable requirements. Employees who are new to Montessori will also have opportunities to develop their understanding of Montessori philosophy and classroom practices through training, observation, coaching, and experience within our classrooms. Schedule This position works across Pine Grove's classrooms throughout the school day and includes several regularly scheduled After Care shifts from 3:30-5:30 PM each week . There are also a small number of required school and family events outside of regular working hours throughout the school year. Specific expectations will be discussed during the hiring process and outlined in the employment contract. Physical Requirements Working with young children is an active job. Candidates should be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to move throughout classrooms and outdoor environments; sit and work at children's level; stand, walk, bend, kneel, and crouch throughout the day; respond quickly when needed; assist or carry young children when necessary for their care or safety; and participate in outdoor supervision throughout the year. Join Pine Grove If you enjoy working with young children, value collaboration, aren't afraid to jump in wherever you're needed, and are interested in learning more about Montessori education, we'd love to hear from you.
